The heart can be described many ways. It is a chakra located in the center of the chest. It is the pathway to giving and receiving love. It is also a major organ in the body, the muscle that pumps blood to circulate through our entire body. The heart is also an area in the body where we express our feelings.
We refer to it often, "My heart is filled with love", " "I am open hearted" or "My heart is closed", "Follow your heart", "Listen to your heart", "I am broken hearted", and so on. We place an extra emphasis on our hearts but are we really connected to it?
A few years ago I participated in a Soul Focused Healing group. We did a Sufi method of connecting with our hearts and listening to what it said. I was shocked and mortified to discover my heart was numb! I couldn't feel anything. It was no surprise once I thought about it. I had a lot of trauma in my life and at the time had gone through a major break up. I was disappointed because I have always seen myself as a loving and openhearted person. I had worked years on healing myself.
I discovered that in order to heal the heart you need to connect with it on a regular basis and really listen to it. My teacher, Deborah Mills, explained that while she had meditated daily for over 15 years her connection to Source wasn't as profound as when she started meditation through the heart, rather than following the connection through the crown.
The heart is not just a chakra, or an organ, it is the fulcrum and the pathway to Source. By spending time daily, connecting with your heart in quiet meditation and really listening and feeling what it has to say, you can clear out so much of the old "stuff". At times, it may be uncomfortable. Thoughts, feelings, and emotions may rise to the surface that you might not want to deal with. If you can "be" with it long enough, it will pass and peace will begin.
I truly believe if we can truly honor our heart and spend time be-ing with it, we can find peace and happiness. We often know what our heart is telling us, yet we go against its admonition. We might know what we are feeling but ignore and discount it. In order to be authentic and true to ourselves, we need to listen to what our heart is saying.
I find I can be much more open hearted when I'm feeling in alignment with what is occurring in my life and in the moment. I feel when things are not congruent, I tend to shut down my heart as a defense mechanism of protection. I wonder if that's such a bad thing? If we can see things are not resonating with us, and we make the necessary changes, no matter how difficult it may be, we can find a place where it is safe to always have our heart open. To me, that is truly what I yearn for.
I spend time daily, either meditating, taking a walk, quiet time in my home or some other type of solitude to find my center and go into my heart. I stay with my feelings until they pass. I find this to be a really useful practice. The most important thing is to stay in the present moment. If we are not referencing the past or projecting into the future we can stay in direct alignment with Source through our heart. Do not try to force, control or rush the process, truly let it be.
The process of opening our heart is a journey. It is our connection to Source, our Higher Self, to one another, and makes giving and receiving love possible. Isn't that what life is truly about?
I am sending you a stream of love from my heart to yours.

Love
Dear God/Goddess,
Please connect me with all the love available to me. I know sometimes I get so busy with life that I don't take the opportunity to really appreciate the love coming to be from numerous sources. My true desire is to come into the present moment where love exists.
Open my heart to accepting the love that comes to me. Open my heart to receiving the tenderness I deserve. Open my heart to giving the love I have for so many. Open my heart to sending the love that is genuine.
I come into this moment, open hearted, vulnerable and alert. I seek to be aware of love in all its forms, beauty and fragility. I honor love as an expression.
I choose not to limit love by what it is supposed to look, feel or be like. I know love comes in many different forms. I want all kinds of love! Please show me how I may not limit the ways love may present itself. And when love comes, prepare me to be open to receive it! I send all my love to you, dear God, I give all my love to me, dear God, I spread around the limitless, abundant love of my heart!!
