A pile of rocks ceases to be a rock when somebody contemplates it with the idea of a cathedral in mind ~ Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
When the missionaries came to Africa they had the Bible and we had the land. They said, “Let us pray”. We closed our eyes. When we opened them we had the Bible and they had the land. ~ Desmond Tutu
The belief that there is only one truth and that oneself is in possession of it seems to me the deepest root of all evil that is in the world. ~ Max Born
It is easier to pull down than to build up. ~ Proverb
In the beginning was the word and it was misunderstood. ~ Native American Saying
Claim the vicinity in the name of divinity. ~ Steve Tripp
July's full Moon in Aquarius falls on July 22 in the U.S. and July 23 in Australia and its the first of two full Moons in Aquarius in this coming month.
The Sabian Symbol for this full Moon is Aquarius 1: An Old Adobe Mission In California. The following is from my book The Sabian Oracle: 360 Degrees Of Wisdom:
‘An Old Adobe Mission in California’ is a symbol of man’s ability to take natural materials from the environment to build something lasting and enduring that protects, sustains and nourishes the community on every level. The ‘Old Adobe Missions’ were built in the early days of California in an attempt to bring civilization to this wild area. Although these ‘Missions’ hold a certain romance in history, people have polarized perspectives of their actual significance.
There’s the romantic colonial version of altruistic Spanish missionaries and soldiers laboring to bring religion and European culture to the backward native peoples, and then there’s the revisionist version: white intruders subjugating and persecuting the Indians, indoctrinating them with religion, killing them off with strange new diseases and obliterating their culture. Somewhere in the middle, the truth can most likely be found.
Sometimes it’s easy to assume that one’s beliefs are right and that others need to be shown the “real truth” or a better way to live their life. Efforts sometimes need to be turned toward creating an infrastructure to pursue our beliefs and way of life and this can enrich everyone’s lives. There is a need for the provision of faith, love and shelter to those who require it. However, the effort may be too big for some and may leave them feeling “homesick”, “homeless” or without a cause. It may be a case of someone trying to change or dominate the core beliefs of someone else, causing emotional restriction and pain. The truth to be remembered is that contributing to other's lives and caring about people in a community is not about control, but acceptance of, and reverence for, each person’s divinity. There’s no need for strict conformity, manipulation or pretension here.
Keywords: Spiritual retreats in natural surroundings. Finding new areas to work with spirit. Creating civilization out of natural elements. Hard work to create places of sanctuary and learning. Places once revered now tourist attractions. Forging links to new worlds. Missions and missionaries. Bringing faith to the “new world”. Brotherhoods. Places that house and protect.
The Caution: Dogmatism. Pushing beliefs and ideas on others. Believing one’s spiritual and religious beliefs contain all the answers. Taking over others' lives. Moving in and taking control. Monuments to the past sagging and fading. People moving in on others. Cults. Indoctrination.
It's interesting to note that we have two full Moons in Aquarius following the trial for the murder of Trayvon Martin in the United States - Aquarius being the sign of brotherhood and humanitarian ideals and the tenet that we are all born equal (or should be recognised as such).
Life has certainly been interesting, challenging and testing for many people in recent times and it can be the return to one's spiritual or communal center that can bring about a healing on many levels. We all have our own way of dealing with or working with the spiritual dimensions of our lives and it can be tempting to force our ideas onto others. The ideal of this Symbol is, however, to provide love, shelter, nourishment and care to those in need - indeed, to everyone.
The Karmic Condition (the degree before) of this full Moon is Capricorn 30: A Secret Meeting Of Men Responsible For World Affairs. This is an interesting degree, especially in the light of recent events regarding governments, etc, listening in to our phone calls and emails, etc. On a more personal level, this can refer to people wanting, or needing, more privacy, the ability to do things the way they want to, being able to discuss plans (or secrets) with trusted others and it can show the ability (or the need) to know who the 'go to' people are to find out what's really going on or to delve into situations that need clarification or light.
Keywords: Sharing innermost secrets. Confidential information. Masterly control. Big guys calling the shots. Being too busy to see people of “lesser” importance in your life. Rationing time. Governments and secrets. Spies. Privy Councils. Planning and plotting. Having a say in things. Doors. Whispers. Records of meetings. Important meetings. Boards of directors and secretaries. Conspiracies.
The Caution: Excluding some. Exploiting people or situations. Elitism. Being controlled by those above. Decisions made behind closed doors. Dark rooms and huddled people talking. Concealing the truth from others. Cliques and committees. Suspicions of motives.
For many, there can be a high level of feeling 'excluded' from what's really going on, whether in your personal life or with your business or governmental affairs. Finding the right people to share your ideas, thoughts or emotions with (and who not to) can be important.
The above two degrees can also show the continuing investigations into abuse in institutions, particularly in churches and other state institutions that have allowed the abuse of children in all manner of ways. I think it's important to recognise that there was enormous abuse of children that was not particularly sexual - although it seems clear that a lot of those abusers of children were getting their kicks from it.
Keywords: Sudden visitations of natural wonder. Something that drops on you, seemingly from out of nowhere. Things erupting and happening fast. Storms in a teacup. Shocks and confrontations with raw energy. Thunder, lightning and electricity. The Tower card of the tarot. Being a lightning rod. Water and rain that quenches and revives. Things being unleashed.
The Caution: Losing control without warning. Emotional instability. A “back draft” of emotions. Bottling up and blowing up. Confused by sudden outbursts. Loud bangs and crashes that shock and stun. Seizing up with fear. Sudden unleashing of emotions. Hurricanes of messy energy.
Times of general calamity and confusion create great minds. The purest ore is produced from the hottest furnace, and the brightest thunderbolt is elicited from the darkest storms. ~ Charles Caleb Colton
The electric energy which motivates us is not within our bodies at all. It is a part of the universal supply which flows through us from the Universal Source with an intensity set by our desires and our will. ~ Walter Russell
Walter Russell (1871-1963) is an enormous inspiration to me. His work defies description and has to be seen to be believed. Put in a nutshell, he said that the nature of the entire universe is light and electricity - we are all light, God is light, we are God. He left school at the age of 9, was a genius at everything he touched and I highly recommend that you check him out, if you don't know about him already.
I believe that mediocrity is self-inflicted and that genius is self-bestowed. ~ Walter Russell
Watch for 'electrical episodes', whether it is energy coursing through your mind, heart or body, or seeing a spectacular lightning storm - I feel there will be messages inherent. The degree of the Sun at the full Moon is Leo 1: Under Emotional Stress, Blood Rushes To A Man's Head. This can have people fired up as well. It can unleash enormous energy and can show issues of inspiration all the way to extreme anger.
Keywords: Ambition. Becoming fired-up. Charging off in all directions at once. Dizziness and disorientation. Nervous breakdowns. Not acting like one’s usual self. Events coming to a head. Feeling like one will explode at any moment. Too many obligations to live up to. Feeling incapable of action. Too much excitement to contain safely. Headaches. Blood pressure. Erections. Animal passions.
The Caution: Becoming ill through emotional suppression. Losing one’s cool. Going off the deep end. Lack of self-restraint. Taking things too seriously. Grumpiness and irritability. Not knowing how to act or respond. Difficulty containing emotional reactions. Unable to make accurate decisions due to irrational thoughts. Sunburn.
This opposition of Aquarius 1 and Leo 1 is largely about sticking to your beliefs, taking a course of action and staying with it and being pure, motivated and energised.
The Karmic Condition (the degree before) of the Sun is Cancer 30: A Daughter Of The American Revolution. It is curious how much unrest may erupt in the States with all that's going on there. I hope sanity prevails in amongst people being able to express their thoughts and frustrations (and being feeling heard).
Keywords: Being bound by social conditioning OR leading the charge to break down the barriers of tradition. Putting in the time to change social conditions for the betterment of all. The feminist movement. Sacrificing personal conviction to ambition. Sacrificing philosophy to a relationship that builds the ego. Inherited values. Being the rebel in the family.
The Caution: Supporting battles that have already been fought. False feelings of superiority. Having to be “in the club” to be accepted. Narrow-minded conservatism. Glorifying the past. Relying on old traditions that were, in their day, radical and transforming. Rejecting one’s inheritance.
Uranus, the ruler of this Aquarian full Moon, is on Aries 13: A Bomb Which Failed To Explode Is Now Safely Hidden From Discovery. One hopes that the 'bombs' that could go off are 'safely hidden' and defused. Having said that, a lot of people have been feeling like their heads (or hearts) could explode and this, of course, can be on many levels and for many reasons, some good and some not so good.
“I lose my temper, but it’s all over in a minute,” said the student. “So is the hydrogen bomb,” I replied. “But think of the damage it produces!” ~ George Sweeting
Keywords: Pressure valves. Getting away with something. Tantrums and frustration. Tempers that simmer. Explosive behavior. Bombs, explosions. Sudden and forceful events. Intelligence organizations, CIA, FBI, ASIO, etc. Valuable lessons of self-restraint. Relief from problems. Discharging nervous energy. Security checks. Last minute escapes.
The Caution: Suppressing stress or illness. Doing inappropriate things and thinking the secret safe. Repressing emotions. Undefined anger. Pressure cooker energy that needs to be released slowly. Explosions damaging more than expected. Activists. Deception behind one’s back. Clash of ideals. Terrorism.
Mercury is now gathering pace to go forward again after being retrograde for the last few weeks. It is on Cancer 14: A Very Old Man Facing A Vast Dark Space To The Northeast.
This is the degree of the Sun in the United States 4th July chart. In amongst many wonderful things, I have long seen this degree to indicate a feeling of desertion and loss, and, often, not having the support one needs from the government or those in charge. It is the degree of the fixed star Sirius and it can be a very spiritual placement.
The greatest thing in the world is not so much where we stand as in what direction we are moving. ~ Goethe
Interestingly, according to modern astronomers, space is finite. This is a very comforting thought - particularly for people who can never remember where they have left things. ~ Woody Allen
Keywords: American Indians and other native peoples that have been left in the dark. Losing faith in the future. The dying out of cultures or languages. Washington DC. Staring into a void. Blindness. Searching for answers. Sirius – the Dog Star. Magnetic shifts. Compass directions. Stargazing. Navigation. Faith. The earth’s poles. Astronomy. Vast dark arenas. Wisdom that comes with age. Feeling old before one's time. Seeking purpose and direction.
The Caution: Seeing nothing. A lack of purpose. Abandonment, rejection, loss and darkness. The exploitation and abandonment of native people. Myopia. Voids. Emptiness.
Venus is on Virgo 1: In A Portrait, The Best Of A Person's Traits And Character Are Idealized. This Symbol speaks of how we look at, portray or judge others. It can, of course, be about how we project ourselves out into the world and how we see or picture ourselves.
Keywords: Projection of beauty. Drawings, paintings, photographs, etc. Art, cosmetics, beauty salons. Hairstyles. Elevated thoughts or memories. Taking someone at face value. Visual senses and clues. Recognition. Caricatures of people. Highlighting features. “Identikit” drawings. Visual prototypes. Profiles. Face reading. Written reviews and references. Viewpoints.
The Caution: Not truly assessing people. Vanity. Superficial judgments. Propaganda. Misleading appearances. Tagging people with labels. Mis-identifications. Taking someone the wrong way. Seeing only the best, or the worst. Preconceived beliefs. Feeling misunderstood. Prejudice. Projections.
Mars is on Cancer 7: Two Fairies (Nature Spirits) Dancing On A Moonlit Night. This can be about grounding, or the need to ground, relationships. There can be a confusion around who the players are here, and if they are seeing each other clearly, or is it all a blur of nighttime visions which disappear in the clear light of day?
Keywords: Usually invisible astral realms. Reconnecting with the feminine. Dancing. Avoiding harsh reality. Slipping away somewhere unnoticed. Seeing what’s usually hidden. Romances that have difficulty in the real world. Dreams and fantasies. Sharing common ground. Full moon celebrations. Moonlight. Sunlight. Couples inspirited. Women celebrating. Other realms. Invoking fantasies. Moon dances.
The Caution: Losing one’s self in emotional dreaming. Not seeing the reality of the other you’re “dancing” with. Lacking responsibility. Escapist attitudes vs. serious decisions. Relationships with no earthly reality or substance. Something too good to be true. Finding it hard to connect with others.
(BTW, for a bit of fun; the pic to the right is Sting with my daughter Jess. He called her up on stage during a concert in Sydney some 13 or so years ago. I've lost the chart now, but the Sun or the Moon or something of significance was on this degree, Two Fairies Dancing On A Moonlit Night - and so it was :) )
Jupiter is on Cancer 6: In Spring, Game Birds Are Feathering Their Nests. Jupiter here, conjunct Mars, can indicate the desire, or the need, to bring security, a place to live, to nest, to be, and to ground relationships into reality. There can be more 'vision' than reality, more of a sense of how things should be than how they really are. Jupiter here can have people moving, making a base, longing for continuity, feeling unsure of their security or feeling that they could be turfed out of their home (nest) at any moment. With Mars, it can that some are lording over others and calling the shots.
It can be that one in a relationship wants to have the security and the other wants to take off to parts far away or unknown. Bringing a sense of reality to relationships can be very challenging now, especially with Mars and Jupiter on these degrees in Cancer. Some will want longevity and security that Cancer promises one minute, but then the next minute they could change their mind. Circumstances can change quickly and opportunities can come up out of nowhere to bring the unexpected.
Keywords: Instinctive dedication. Laying the groundwork for those to come. Creating a base to feel safe. Nurturing. Endangered habitat. Raising money. Making yourself or someone else comfortable. Interior decoration. Preparation. Home building. Landlords and tenants. Noisy or nosy neighbors. Renting vs. owning. Watching for danger. The nesting instinct. Renovations. Babies rooms. Working to pay the mortgage or rent.
The Caution: Being unnecessarily afraid to venture out on “one’s own”. Taking over other people’s territory. Feeling unwanted. Danger. Fussing over small details. Over-preparation. Not knowing how long one can hold out in a situation. Being vulnerable to change. Being at the mercy of others. Endless housework.
Saturn is on the last minute of Scorpio 5: A Massive, Unchanging Rocky Shore Resists The Pounding Of The Sea where it has been for several weeks. This degree speaks about relentless, unchanging reality. How long are we able to resist changing? It can feel like Chinese water torture.
Just hours after the full Moon, Saturn moves onto Scorpio 6: The Gold Rush Tears Men Away From Their Native Soil. This speaks about wanting to find new places, new solutions, new remedies and the desire to leave the past behind for a better life.
Keywords: Strong desires to move on. The longing and the search for the easy fulfillment of hopes and dreams. Leaving one’s native soil. Having a cause or mission to pursue. Leaving home, people, family. Dropping everything to chase a project. Pilgrimages. The search for riches. Immigration and migration. Listening to clues. The search for the Holy Grail. Pursuing a better life.
The Caution: Chasing the impossible dream. Losing everything. Being unrealistic or opportunistic. Not being content with what one’s got. The grass being greener elsewhere. Lusting after rewards that may be unreal or transitory. Risking what one has for what one could have. Wild goose chases.
Neptune is on Pisces 5: A Church Bazaar. This can be a lovely degree, with people coming together and feeling a sense of community and belonging, but we can find that issues of faith can overtake logic, or, we do things for others more than we do them for ourselves, or, it can be that we do things without factoring in a reward for ourselves, especially when it comes to money. Boundaries around faith can emerge too, especially if the sentiment is "my faith/beliefs/church/ideals/friends/community/race are better than yours".
Keywords: Overcoming loneliness and alienation. Selling things. The issue of real worth. A lot of effort for small rewards. Small scale commercial bartering and interchange. The collection plate. Generosity and charitable community attitudes. Jars of jam and things handmade. Bric-a-brac. Bargains. Practical spirituality. Volunteers. People sharing the load. Charity work. Money raising. Garage or yard sales. Second hand clothes.
The Caution: Spiritual or social exclusivity. Giving things smaller worth than they deserve. Using people. Deception on the grounds of faith. Fussing about small details. Fighting over “position”. Issues of territory. Pushy people. Social boundaries that exclude some.
On the weekend following this full Moon, Venus will come to oppose Neptune and relationships can go to new levels of commitment while others may crash and burn as reality sets in and people see what is really going on. Are you really 'dancing together', or, was it just an illusion? Mars will also come to oppose Pluto, so it seems set that some hard and fast or harsh realities are going to slot into place. Questions can be answered (sometimes finally) and ambitions stirred and things can get out of hand if there's not a sense of keeping one's equilibrium.
Pluto is on Capricorn 10: An Albatross Feeding From The Hand Of A Sailor. This Symbol shows the need to get rid of things that pull you down, hold you in static situations that no longer serve or 'feed' you, keep you from realising your sense of power, hold you in problems that need real-time solutions, not maintaining fears and superstitions from the past. This is an image that implies the necessity of being able to overcome the perceived separation between us and other living beings.
Feelings of separation are usually the case when we don’t really understand or trust each other in some way. The ‘Albatross’ has to overcome the fear it experiences from being in such close contact with a human and the ‘Sailor’ has to fight his superstitions that surround the ‘Albatross’. In “The Ancient Mariner”, a sailor is condemned to eternally sail the world, after killing an albatross that had helped rescue his ship. He was cursed and damned because of his actions. Redemption can come through wise and loving actions, not those that feed negativity and superstition.
Keywords: Feeding one’s higher nature with good nourishment. Banishing worries, so that one can fly ever higher. Overcoming superstitions or beliefs. Travelers who put themselves at risk in foreign lands or cultures. Talking to anybody anywhere. Sharing one’s bounty. Sailors, boats. Birds. Empathy and sympathy for others. Restoring trust and hope.
The Caution: Manipulating events or people with false nourishment. Having alternative motives for wanting to draw others close. Being afraid of strangers or strange situations. The loss of independence. Fear of intimacy.
Chiron is on Pisces 14: A Lady Wrapped In Fox Fur. Chiron has been on this degree for several months. This Symbol speaks of seeing through situations and people for what they really are. Have you been hoodwinked into believing something that's not true? Have you forgotten how wise, powerful, magnetic and strong you are? Using the totem of the fox can help boost your animal powers.
Keywords: Outer expressions of real inner worth. Animal magnetism and attraction. Intelligence and its display. Cloaks of feminine wit and sexuality. Beguiling minds. Animal totems and furs. Perceived beauty. The sense of having class and money. Beauty, fashion and talent. Being forward and upfront. Sense of personal style. Grace and composure. Elegance. Knowing what to say and when. Dressing up. Money spent on beauty. Tempting others with sexual signals. Perfumes. Pheromones. Taxidermy.
The Caution: False fronts and expressions of wealth. Selling out for momentary, or monetary, gain. Wrapped in intellectual superficiality. The fatal allure of beauty. Scoring points solely through charisma. Being so caught up in fashion and glamor that one loses a true sense of self. Being overdressed.
It's interesting to note that these last two degrees - Pluto and Chiron - are both about having something 'draped around your neck'. In the Albatross degree of Pluto, the albatross was tied around the neck of the sailor who killed it and he was condemned to having that rotting carcass (and the curse) attached to him for years as he sailed the oceans without any let-up. And, of course, the 'Fox Fur' is worn around one's neck as well. In the case of the fox fur, there is more 'protection' than the albatross was able to provide. Things to ponder.
The Moon's north node is on Scorpio 14: Telephone Linesmen At Work Installing NewConnections. How are you connecting with others and the world out there? Are you communicating with the folks you want to be communicating with? What messages are you receiving? How are your lines going in this regard?
Keywords: Acupuncture and other therapies that work on the body’s meridians. The nervous system. The Internet. Forming new lines of communication. New connections taking place. Linking people up. Making sure that messages get through. Mobile phones, faxes, email. Networks and networking. Switchboards. Satellites. Wires. The ability to reach far distances. Getting on other peoples’ wavelengths. Contacts. Hooking up with the system. UFO experiences. Mobile phones.
The Caution: Failing to see the necessity for repairs to personal communication. Becoming involved in other people’s lives. Gossip. News, thoughts and ideas spreading rapidly and getting out of control. Constant chatting. Being fickle. Sabotage. Engaged signals.
Mercury, at Cancer 14, is exactly trine the Moon's node on Scorpio 14, so this is a good time to become more 'engaged' in your communications with others. There will be some that you don't want, or need, to communicate - like the Albatross around the Ancient Mariner's neck, how long will you carry that burden - and there will be those that you do want to connect or reconnect with. There is also a lovely grand trine between Jupiter and Mars in Cancer, Saturn in Scorpio and Neptune in Pisces, so this can be a great time to realign with your values, desires and beliefs.
