Concentration, Co-Operation, Containment And January's Cancerian Full Moon

Occurring on January 16, January's Cancerian full Moon is one of sorting out our relationships (Venus in square aspect to Mars and opposing Jupiter - with Pluto and Uranus in the mix) with others and also figuring out our relationship to our selves. We are being asked to look deeply into situations and people to see what is authentic and what is not, what is true relating and what is trying to win approval or maneuver one's way through the maze of relationship issues. Further, Lilith is conjunct (together with) this full Moon, bringing a deeper feminine aspect to this Cancerian lunation.

The Sabian Symbol for this full Moon is Cancer 27: Guests Are Reading In The Library Of A Luxurious Home - taken from my book The Sabian Oracle: 360 Degrees Of Wisdom:

The Symbol ‘Guests are Reading in the Library of a Luxurious Home’ pictures people taking an opportunity to relax and enjoy themselves in comfortable surroundings. It is a time to catch up on the thoughts of others, whether by reading books, magazines, newspapers or having quiet moments in conversation with people, hopefully without feeling any pressure to return to work.

If one feels at home in this situation, there will be feelings of release and relaxation. There is the opportunity to do some reading, a few crossword puzzles, perhaps some researching or learning, etc. There does, however, need to be caution against self-indulgence, or just sitting around as this could lead to laziness and a lack of motivation to get going with life. The ‘Luxurious Home’ illustrates the fact that the opportunity to take time out to read, or learn is really a ‘Luxury’ for many people.

If you feel that everything is too confusing and complicated, perhaps you should go somewhere that allows for quiet times and informed reflection. We all lead busy lives, but finding time for ‘Reading’ or other leisure activities should not have to be difficult. Remember that life consists of more than work. Play as much as you can – don’t live life dreading the weekdays and longing for weekends.

Nowadays, you don’t even have to leave home to enjoy others and exchange thoughts; the Internet can bring both people and huge libraries of information, saving you the effort of physically going out and searching for them. We are able to have access to a wide range of information, comment and imagination without the restrictions of having to be wealthy-both in the luxury of time and the availability of valuable material.

Keywords: Sharing of thoughts and ideas in an environment of social privilege. Social protocol that says what one should be digesting, emotionally, intellectually or physically. Libraries. Hotel reading rooms. Chatting quietly. Books, magazines. Quiet, knowing atmosphere.

The Caution: Relating on a superficial level or not being able to relate at all because of social expectations. Being told to “keep quiet”. Not saying what one really feels. Focusing on the mind, not the heart. Not being invited to the inner circle.

Just moments after the exact time of the full Moon, the Moonmoves onto Cancer 27: A Violent Storm In A Canyon Filled With Valuable Homes. Although this is somewhat of an alarming degree, you may find that it expresses itself in the world outside in the form of weather or events that you are witnessing (either in real life or in the media)....

‘A Violent Storm in a Canyon Filled With Expensive Homes’ shows that a ‘Storm’ has suddenly released its fury on those in its path. The ‘Weather’ that has been unleashed can reflect actual weather, or psychological or emotional conditions. The ‘Homes’ need not be ‘Valuable’, but are places that are “valuable” to the occupants, they usually feel protected and safe. Somehow, a ‘Storm’ has raged through and exactly what will happen next may be rather uncertain.

You may find yourself much deeper in a situation than you may have imagined, and now you are caged by the “walls” around you. There is probably no immediate escape from the turbulence that is happening. You may have had some forewarning that this ‘Storm’ was coming; with pressure piling up, threatening to explode at any moment. You may have had no intention or made no particular movements to invoke this ‘Storm’, however it’s out of hand in your environment nonetheless. The best thing to do is to wait it out and protect yourself, and those around you.

Although this may have been building for days, or years, many are often taken by surprise at the sudden turn of events or the intensity of what’s being unleashed. An event or something that was said can let loose a torrent of emotional and physical energy that may be hard to contain. In fact, endeavoring to contain it may result in more damage. Things probably need to blow themselves out naturally. A positive outcome may not come to light for awhile, but things will fall back where they are meant to, in the end. Look back to see what you’ve contributed, as it may help to see a way out, or at least reconcile what’s happened. It’s likely that a number of people have been affected. It may be a disaster, or it may end up being a blessing in some way. See if you can rebuild your community – some people may have to be left out of your life, however.

Keywords: Arguments and emotional confrontations. The “pressure cooker” environments of modern-day living. Psychic energy unleashed. Furious emotions. Changing the status quo. Bad weather and its consequences. Rebuilding from the foundations. Living in canyons. Being surrounded by mountainous peaks. The awesome power of nature.

The Caution: Wrongly believing that you are in control of the uncontrollable. Enjoyment of emotional storms and turmoil. Lots of noise that erupts out of nowhere. Whipping things up. Lifethreatening behavior. Confrontations. Storm fronts. Social upheavals.

Lilith is on Cancer 25: A Leader Of Men Wrapped In An Invisible Cloak Of Power. This is a powerful degree and it brings up issues to do with being seen, being 'visible' or 'invisible' and whether we have allowed ourselves to descend into a sense of being in charge, being in control and accepting our gifts and possibilities. This is a feminine energy and the fact that Lilith is smack in amongst this full Moon shows that the goddess energy is going to be in high relief and evident in amongst what is going on. We may find ourselves angry or outraged by the abuses against nature, against our lives, against common sense or whatever... the abuses have been in evidence on this planet for many years and this combination of Symbol with Lilith and the full Moon is most likely saying that we need to acknowledge our ability to make changes, to grasp our sense of who and what we are.

Keywords: Leadership and its honors and responsibilities. Powerful descent of energies taking over one’s being. Feeling invincible that one can do nothing wrong. Hugging and being hugged. Sore shoulders. Shawls and cloaks that empower or cover up. Gurus. Quiet, unassuming strength. Charisma, strength and presence. Beautiful coats. Furs. Huge personalities.

The Caution: Shows of superiority. Presuming oneself to be more than one is. Megalomania. Abuse of power. Not owning one’s magnificence. Having the weight of the world on your shoulders. People on power trips. Lording it over others. Being pushy.

The Sun is on Capricorn 25: A Nature Spirit Dancing In The Mist Of A Waterfall. There seems to be the need for a curious blend of asserting one's power and self along with skipping over things with a 'light nature'. An interesting conundrum, but then full Moons always are to some extent.

This Symbol can represent feelings of emotional lightness and almost mischievous intentions. The deeper parts of feelings are sometimes ignored, or rejected, as the ‘Spirit’ flits over the surface of any troubles. ‘Nature Spirits’ should be carefree and able to express themselves as they want. Go with your feelings and don’t worry too much about social restrictions. Finding a comfortable and safe place in a situation or place may be necessary. ‘Dancing’ and going with your gut feelings can lift your spirits to new heights.

Be aware, however, that some people may not take your actions seriously. If you feel like ‘Dancing’, there’s no need to worry that people might see you. Indeed, it may be a really good idea for people to see your light side, the one that can throw caution to the wind. Whilst this is, essentially, a beautiful Symbol of a “lightness of being”, there may be an element of feeling cut off from one’s body, or reality. Whatever, your worries or burdens can lift, leaving you feeling lighter and happier. Dance in ‘The Mist’, in the gentle mysteries that arise even in the midst of life’s struggles. That is the true way of the ‘Nature Spirit’; they’re not concerned with the inane problems of life!

Keywords: Effervescent spirits or escapism. Dancing in a carefree manner. Water and fun. Peter Pan characters. Mountains, mists, fog. Reveling in nature. Picking up subtle energies. Being healed because of the heightened atmosphere (altitude). Celebrations of the natural world. Waterfalls. Water spraying and dripping. Finding one’s habitat. Chinese water-torture. Water nymphs, fairies and nature spirits, devas, and angels.

The Caution: Irresponsibility, avoidance of real situations. Not taking anything seriously. Avoiding social restrictions. Flitting off. Being held down and repressed when one is longing for light relief. Feeling abused by pressure. Being subjugated by cold, icy elements, thoughts or emotions. Tricks or perceptions of the light. Fear of dark places.

Just moments after the full Moon, the Sun moves onto Capricorn 27: A Mountain Pilgrimage. Of course, we have to be on a mountain, or at least elevated in altitude, to have a waterfall. Also, being on a 'mountain top' (whatever this may mean to you) could remove you from the 'Violent Storm'. This Symbol speaks about the journey to the top and the desire to reach some form of attainment or accomplishment. It is a rather ambitious degree and I often see people who are politically, economically or socially inclined and ambitious having this degree.

There may be a need to strive and to learn more on your path to understanding and fulfillment. You may feel the desire to follow those who have gone before you in order to achieve a true sense of inner fulfillment and achievement. The effort that you have to expend is sometimes great, but, then, so can be the rewards. A keen sense of ambition that knows few limitations or boundaries can lead to the top, even though it might be a steep climb. This ‘Pilgrimage’ can signal the need to get back to the purer elements of life and finding one’s spiritual grounding.

The effort involved in the ‘Mountain Pilgrimage’ can take you away from friends and family, and those things that have been familiar and comforting to you. However, you may be surrounded, sometimes above and sometimes below, by people who share the same hopes and visions. These aren’t necessarily the friends and family that you are used to sharing your life with, but people you meet up with on the journey. Still, this may be a lonely journey, whether you are with others or not. Regardless, keep striving – it may be well worth the time and effort as you work to reach your own ‘Mountain’ top.

Keywords: Ascent in consciousness. Spiritual, material, corporate or political striving. Having an entourage of people (or wanting one). Aloneness and separation. Setting off to somewhere. Going on a mission. Finding one’s spiritual grounding. Getting back to the purer elements in life. Pure elements.

The Caution: High moral stands with no depth of feeling. Feeling “high above” others. Feelings of being, or acting like, an ascended being. Haughtiness. Intellectual snobbery. People scrambling for the top. The “tall poppy” syndrome.

Mercury is on Aquarius 8: Beautifully Gowned Wax Figures On Display. This Symbol often asks the question of what is real and what is merely 'window dressing', what superficial dimensions are there to the way you, or others, are communicating or sharing your lives? Has too much reliance been placed on how things look rather than how things actually are? This can be a rather narcissistic degree as it can be more surface value than depth driven.

Keywords: Setting standards. Exemplars of social ritual. Superficial values on display. Superficial beauty or avatars of fashion? Not showing true feelings. Beauty salons, modeling. Judging a book by its cover. No substance. Pretty on the outside. Positions of power and privilege that feel unreal. Models. Beauty and its allure. Store dummies. Money spent on appearances. Always having to look good.

The Caution: Putting on a false front. Expecting to be noticed. Acting “wooden” about something. Not contributing anything of real value. Beauty that has no “voice”. Store dummies. Lack of depth and integrity. Fake responses. Acting for social acceptance. Bloodless realities. Lifeless figures. Obsession with beauty and fashion.

Venus is retrograde on Capricorn 19: A Child Of About Five Carrying A Huge Shopping Bag Filled With Groceries. What 'burdens' are you carrying? Are you taking on too much responsibility? Do you shirk your responsibilities? Are you weighed down with the expectations of self or others or society?

Keywords: Being the one everyone counts on to do the job. Feeling weighed down. Having to carry the “bag”. Lifting heavy weights and bearing the consequences. Taking on things above and beyond what one should. Being the grownup. Maturing quickly. Looking after paperwork. Running errands.

The Caution: Overloading the innocent and the inexperienced without thought of the consequences. Taking on too much. Not allowing for fun and carefree activities. Never being “off-duty”. Joint, back and shoulder problems. Growing up too fast. Having a serious attitude. Lack of childhood.

Mars is on Libra 18: Two Men Placed Under Arrest Give An Accounting For Their Acts Before The Tribunal Of Society. So, Venus and Mars are in square aspect to each other. Mars here can bring about realisations of where we compromise our selves, our lives, our beliefs, our resources, abilities or time to satisfy others. Someone may need to 'spill the beans' about what is going on for them, although finger-pointing may result, so it pays to take a look at what you've contributed to situations that arise now. This degree can show people staying in relationships longer than the relationships use-by date.

Keywords: Having to plead one’s case. The need for “legal help”. Unacceptable principles. Blowing the whistle. Pointing at others to get off charges. People unable to relate. The “Romeo and Juliet” story. Feeling caught out. Restrictions. Saturn. Karma to be worked out. Being framed. Circumstances out of control. People in handcuffs. Identification parades. Police. The law. Lawyers. Judges. Juries. Tribunals.

The Caution: Refusing to conform to society’s mores. The sabotage of relationship values. Feeling stuck, unable to move. Staying in relationships when one should move on. Deadening emotions. Shutting off to cope with others. Not having one’s point of view heard. Losing one’s authority. Being bound karmically. Being tied up and limited.

Very soon after the full Moon, Mars moves onto another rather challenging Libra degree. It's on Libra 19: A Gang Of Robbers In Hiding. Issues, beliefs and mind sets that may have been suppressed or unacknowledged can come roaring out into the open in order to be dealt with. This can be a good thing, but paranoia can set in if we feel that we're in situations that we cannot control. Identifying and 'outing' those 'Robbers' that are ganging up on us can help bring light and air to situations that have felt 'arrested'.

Keywords: Gaining unfair advantage. Robbers and thieves. Spying. The cold war. Big business ripping off the “little guy”. People appearing to be something that they are not. Con-men mentality. Holding up proceedings. Mental attitudes that sabotage, restrict or control. The need for light. Voyeurism. Gangs.

The Caution: Gaining unfair advantage at someone else’s expense. Finding it hard to trust anything. Difficult hidden energy that may erupt into consciousness. Feeling that someone is going to “get” you. Hiding in the shadows. Locks and shutters that prevent true relationship.

Venus and Jupiter are opposing each other, which in itself can bring on a feeling of having overdone things (or a temptation to continue to do it). Mars is also in a square to Jupiter, so things can feel overblown and overstated. The Symbol represents a few themes that I've heard people talk about a lot lately.

Jupiter is on Cancer 15: A Group Of People Have Overeaten And Enjoyed it. This not only speaks about overeating, drinking a lot, imbibing all kinds of things to excess - it also talks about consumerism, spending too much, going into debt buying things that one may not particularly need.

Keywords: Consumerism. Communal cohesion through indulging in the senses. Satisfied hunger. Commercialism and longing to own things. Eating disorders. The right of everyone to enjoy food and nourishment. Big business. Success. Enjoying “the good life”. Having plenty. Abundance. Temporary fulfillment.

The Caution: Self-indulgence through the senses. The “haves” and the “have-nots”. People going without so that others can have more. Monopolization. Bloating. Feeling that one deserves everything on a platter. Overweight. Bad nourishment. Eating binges. Indigestion. Obsession with ownership. Deprivation. Exploiting resources. Overspending. Gluttony.

Saturn is on Scorpio 22: Hunters Protected By Heavy Clothing Are Shooting At Wild Ducks. This can be quite a challenging degree in that it can (doesn't have to be though!) be cruel, threatening, neglectful or downright scary with guns and camouflage and it can be that those who are threatening and taking away peoples' (or animals') personal liberty are not able to be identified or seen clearly... the 'Heavy Clothing' can be camouflage for a much deeper, more sinister, agenda.

In Australia, there is a shark cull and a big cull of cockatoos and many are upset about it. Of course, Saturn on this degree can bring up much more threatening, more immediate concerns about guns and people's rights and there could be another shooting incident (I hope not, but then when isn't there one?). There is light relief in some measure at least as Saturn is trining this full Moon...

Keywords: Satiating one’s aggressive desires. Being able to hit the mark. Putting up with violence in one’s life, whether physical, mental, spiritual or emotional. Road, and other, types of rage. The armed services and their responsibilities. War. Terrorism in its many forms. Camouflage. The armed forces. Armaments.

The Caution: Exploitation of those who are more vulnerable. Taking unfair advantage of the innocent or the less experienced. Feeling like a sitting duck. Nowhere to run or hide. Hormones running rampant. Mindless violence. War crimes tribunals. Gang warfare. Indiscriminate actions.

Uranus is on Aries 9: A Seer Gazes Intently Into A Crystal Ball Before Him. Uranus has been on this degree for months and months and it is about to move to the next degree. It seems to be saying to keep your focus and look directly into the heart of things (or people or situations) in order to see what is really going on.

Keywords: Flashes of inspiration. Tuning in and looking within for answers. Creative visualizations. Aura readings. Cutting through irrelevant messages. Looking carefully at structure. Seeking perfection. Clairvoyance. Illumination and deep insights. Looking ahead to see the signs.

The Caution: Confused by literal meanings. Not seeing the symbolic message. Always looking this way and that, not at the center. Getting lost in the big picture. Daydreaming and ignoring what’s really going on. Obsessing over what may happen. Needing to know what’s coming up. Being impatient.

Neptune is on Pisces 4: Heavy Traffic Linking Two Seaside Resorts. This degree can show a lot of travel, people running around, running to and fro and generally being on the go. There can be traffic jams all the way to digestive problems. Flowing with things can be quite a challenge, but rewarding as well as you make your way to your destination.

Keywords: Going with the flow. Running back and forth. Having to move continually. Pollution and car exhaust. Rush hour and road-rage. Plans for arrivals and departures. Public holidays. Traffic jams. Traffic banking up. Having trouble making left hand turns. Detours. Packing and unpacking. Luggage. Travel itineraries. Impasses. Nervous systems. Urine therapy. Constant phone calls. Switchboard jams.

The Caution: Creating barriers. Constant traffic stopping the possibility of real human interchange. Claustrophobia. Feeling like there is no escape. Exhaustion due to everyday hustle and bustle. Running out of fuel. Exhaust fumes. Road rage. Accidents. Traffic snarls. Taking the long way round. Blockages.

Pluto is on Capricorn 12: A Student Of Nature Lecturing, Revealing Little Known Aspects Of Life. This can reveal issues such as climate change and global warming (or global cooling - who really knows what is happening) and some mysteries can be revealed that have perhaps long been kept secret.

Keywords: Observing what’s around and translating it so others may learn. Green politics. Revealing things and issues the conservatives don’t want revealed. Nature and natural remedies. Science and its rewards and drawbacks. Issues such as global warming. Whistle blowers. Natural healing methods. Documentaries.

The Caution: Radical non-humanistic views. Intellectual smugness. ‘Lecturing’ and browbeating. Modern technological advances that stifle the environment. Lip service to conservation issues.

The Moon's north node is on Scorpio 4: A Youth Holding A Lighted Candle In A Devotional Ritual Gains A Sense Of The Great Other World. As with Pluto's Symbol, this is a great degree for being able to penetrate the 'mysteries' - much can be revealed and ritual may be a part of the process.

Keywords: Simple ideals. Ceremonies that are pure and uncomplicated. Affirming intention to the path. The light of consciousness. Shining a light that brings understanding of things on the spiritual level. Spiritualist meetings. Feeling overwhelmed. Enlightenment. Wide - eyed innocence. Sexual experiments leading to transcendence. Potency.

The Caution: Naive reliance on insincere promises. Feeling like someone is too young to be of any worth. False feelings of reverence and enlightenment. Placebos. Hallucinogens.

Chiron is on Pisces 11: People On A Narrow Path, Seeking Illumination. Chiron's message appears to be that we need to choose a path, or stay on the path that we have chosen, and keep moving towards the light. This is a particularly spiritual degree, but it can, at times, indicate narrow-mindedness and an inability to see alternatives, which may be needed if we've been working at something for years and have become inflexible or blinkered to alternatives. If the 'Path' you're on is working for you, then it is a good idea to stay on that path, even if others are judging us or not agreeing with what we are doing.

Keywords: People “on the Path”. Sticking to one mindset, diet, regimen or habit. Having a cause to follow. Not looking sideways. Awakening one’s base senses in order to progress. Physical ecstasy. Being in the now. Going towards the light. Staying true to self. The promise of light at the end of the journey.

The Caution: Blinded by the light. Not knowing where you’re really going. Disillusionment about what’s been chosen. Being one-eyed about goals and beliefs. The denial of physical pleasure. Puritanical behavior. Distractions that stop forward movement. Narrow mindedness.

Navigating the emotional waters of this full Moon is going to be interesting as the message are so mixed. It's a blend of being assertive and being relaxed and meditative, being on one's best behaviour against having to negotiate the 'storms' that may be erupting.

I wish everyone a peaceful, contemplative and yet fun and eventful full Moon!
