September's new Moon falls on September 5 in the United States and in Australia. It is one that speaks to issues of family, relationships and family. In the larger scheme of things, it brings up the idea that we are all family, that we all belong to the bigger picture of humanity. How do we perceive our family and our sense of being, merging and belonging with the earth and its inhabitants? A big story, this one, but one I feel is so important, particularly with the sabre-rattling that is going on so alarmingly in the world at the moment.

The Sabian Symbol for the new Moon is Virgo 14: Finely Lettered Names And Mysterious Lines Are Seen; It Is A Family Tree.

Remember as far as anyone knows, we’re a nice normal family. ~ Homer Simpson

The interpretations of the degrees are from my book The Sabian Oracle: 360 Degrees Of Wisdom

‘Finely Lettered Names and Mysterious Lines’ are Seen; ‘It Is a Family Tree’. This Symbol gives the impression that the ‘Family Tree’ is beautifully designed and mapped out. The 'Tree’ has branches with names connecting to more and more names as one goes back through the family history. There is often a sense of nostalgia and grandeur with ‘Family Trees’. Many people are fascinated, and sometimes amazed, by looking back to their forefathers; where they came from, and who their close relations were. Some members of the ‘Family’ will see the relevance and the importance of the history and the ‘Mystery’ of the 'family' lineage; meanwhile others may not even want to look.

There is a need to call upon the deeper and inherent knowledge within. What’s been learnt from past experience, possibly from one’s ancestral roots, will help you allocate your greatest strength. This Symbol implies the need to feel links to a strong ‘Family’ heritage or the desire for the sense of security that it can bring. If there is no strong sense of one’s own biological ‘Family’, this can be found through associations with people of like mind, or with those who share a common purpose in life.

How do you see your place in the grand scheme of things? Both physically and spiritually, you carry the blood of all those who went before you. How attached are you to your ‘Family’ and your origins. Where have you come from? How do you feel about the role you have in your ‘Family’? Do you feel involved, wanted and loved? Proving yourself and your bloodline can lead to a stronger sense of self and belonging and an understanding of how you fit in.

Keywords: Strength in tradition. Belonging to a lineage. The story of where one comes from. Issues of pride of heritage. The importance of parents and family. Branches in databases. Having strong and secure roots. Origins and their relevance to today’s life. Ancestors. Calligraphy. Fine pens. Filling in the gaps. Adoptions. Step families.

The Caution: Disassociation or disconnection from family history.Exclusivity or snobbery. Feeling like an alien. Feeling, or being, a stranger in a strange world. Orphans. Being adopted. Not knowing where one came from. Being stuck with people you don’t know. Examining your roots. Missing identities.

The 'Karmic Condition' (the degree before) of the Sun of the new Moon is Virgo 13: A Powerful Statesman Overcomes A State Of Political Hysteria.

A government is like fire, a handy servant, but a dangerous master. ~ George Washington

The worst tyrants are those which establish themselves in our own breasts. ~ William Ellery Channing

Keywords: The power to sway the mob. Having the charisma and talent to turn situations around. Reining in elements of personality that get out of control and take over. Pulling the rope tight. Mind control. Political savvy. Knowing what to say and when to say it. Keeping your mouth shut and ears open. Rhetoric. Putting out spot fires.

The Caution: Conscious emotional manipulation and bullying. Misusing charismatic energy to sway others to personal advantage. Being aggressive, demanding and overbearing. Hypnotic persuasion. Propaganda. Misinformation. Using “political speak” to control situations or people. Emotional repression.

Mercury is the ruler of the Virgo new Moon, so it has a rather strong influence. Issues to do with relationships, particularly co dependent situations where one can feel tied to (or chained to) another, or others. It asks for pure motivations, being careful with one's self and others by being gentle, approachable, loving and giving.

Mercury is on Virgo 24: Mary And Her White Lamb

‘Mary and Her White Lamb’ is a Symbol reflecting innocence and purity. It is derived from an old nursery rhyme; ‘Mary’s White Lamb’ followed her wherever she might go. They had a very strong bond between them. The 'Lamb' seemed to very taken by 'Mary'. There is probably a need to be watchful for dependent or codependent behavior with others, as this story shows a strong sense of attachment and dependence.

Is someone following someone else around, or acting like a doe-eyed lamb? Maybe they are constantly checking on the other, wanting to know their every move. Are they trying to monopolize someone, whilst excluding others? If someone were to leave the scene, how would the other react? Sometimes, what seems to be “codependent” behavior is someone merely looking out for your best interests, so don’t assume the worst right away.

Look at their motives, or your own, for that matter, for this clingy behavior and assess why they are behaving the way they are. Having a belief in the integrity of people and the purity of their motives can bring joy and a sense of belonging. There is usually a strong feeling of kindness and softness with this Symbol. Keeping a sense of innocence, purity and honesty in the situation will lift you up and out of any problems. Being kind and yet firm, loving and yet a separate individual, sharing without losing your boundaries can lead to a wonderful, pure experience of love and friendship. There’s a need for imagination mixed with simplicity.

However, there can be a feeling of being “lost” in the wilderness when there’s no support or reassurance from others. In terms of relationships, there can be an imbalance where one person looks up to the other. Be watchful, to see if anyone is giving away their power in this situation.

Keywords: Simple childlike innocence or pure escapism. Naivety. The Mary and Jesus story. Dependence. Kindness. Friendship. Bonds between pets and owners. Believing in the essential goodness of others. Hanging out with people. Looking out for someone. Cuteness. The urge to prove something. Dislike of dirt or grime. Being ‘addicted’ to someone or something.

The Caution : Naiveté. Avoiding real issues. Stalking. Over protection. Doubting motives. Paranoia that someone is following you. Feeling lost without the other. Doe-eyed attraction. Clinging to people. Arousing jealousy through favoritism. Not leaving people alone. Checking people’s whereabouts. Not growing up. Being the black sheep.

Directly opposite the new Moon is Chiron - The Wounded Healer and The Stories We Tell Ourselves - on Pisces 12: An Examination Of Initiates In The Sanctuary Of An Occult Brotherhood. Whether we feel that we are being watched or 'examined', or being judged, or indeed, doing it to others, or needing to examine others' motives, this Symbol is pushing the envelope for us in many ways. Can we trust the stories we're being told? Are we being told the whole story? Do we worry about our own sense of 'authenticity' as we grapple with issues to do with the truth?

An interesting fact, and one that nonetheless makes him no less of a tyrant, bought to my attention by Larry Ely, is that President Assad of Syria is an Alawite... from http://www.muslimhope.com/Alawites.htm

While Mohammed was against astrology, Alawites use astrology; perhaps they were influenced by Zoroastrians here. They believe the stars in the Milky Way are actually the deified souls of believers.

Keywords: The ordeal that comes to any initiate for entrance into higher realms of being. Hermits. Tests, examinations, having to prove oneself. Being judged or being judgmental. Being cross-examined. Rarefied atmospheres that demand personal sacrifice. Initiations. Proving courage and purity. Trials. The attainment of knowledge. Apprenticeships. Being a candidate. Finding out how and where one fits in. One-eyed dedication. Trial by media. Cults. Rituals.

The Caution: Refusing advice. Arrogance. People saying “I told you so”. Invading other’s private space. Hiding away because of fear or social ridicule. Severe trials and tests that strip the joy of life. People assuming they know the truth about others. Fear of failure. Not living up to other’s expectations. Narrow mindedness. Harsh treatment. Going without.

Venus is on Libra 24: A Third Wing On The Left Side Of A Butterfly. This speaks of the need to gain 'balance' in all that one does, even if you're leaning far to one side, one needs to find a middle ground.

Keywords: Creative overbalance. Bodily impairments and handicaps. Being light, flippant and fluttering from thing to thing. Over-sensitivities. Oddities. Beautiful imperfections. Idiot savants. Imbalances. One side of the body being more perfect than the other.

The Caution: Unrealistic reliance on being different. Obsession with strange things. Feeling useless and out of place. Flapping around and not getting anywhere. Restlessness and nervousness. Lopsidedness.

Mars is squaring Saturn and will close in on that square in the days following the new Moon. This can be frustrating, limiting, anger making and generally a difficult transit. We may want to push through with our agenda, but feel held back by forces both within and outside of ourselves. The war drums may continue to beat and this can bring up feelings of anger, disillusionment and a sense of ineffectualness and it can feel like one's voice, or needs, are not being heard or met. Not an easy transit, but it can bring us face-to-face with the things we need to do or change.

Mars is on Leo 6: An Old Fashioned Conservative Woman Is Brought Face-To-Face With An Up-To-Date Girl. Issues to do with age, feeling revelant, being able to control one's destiny, beauty, fashion, etc, can come up. Australia is holding its Federal Election on September 7. It will be interesting to see what happens. Many Australians feel horrified at the thought of the conservative party's leader becoming Prime Minister. His name is Tony Abbott and his nick name is The Mad Monk. Catholic, he espouses those antiquated beliefs that keep many in chains while supporting big companies. I for one, imagine I may be feeling the stress of this Mars/Saturn square if The Mad Monk wins.

Keywords: Conservatism challenged by changing, energetic forms. Learning to let one’s hair down. Letting go and having a good time. Issues of age and what one’s capable of. Ideas challenged. Learning experiences. Renovations. Business takeovers. Different capabilities and talents. People acting or working together regardless of their differences. Generational differences.

The Caution: Denying the duality within. Being afraid to get out there. Jealousy between people on different levels of being or different ages. Paying no attention to change/being afraid of it. Difficult combinations of people. Projection of the shadow. Standoffs. Criticism. Derision, envy, fear, jealousy.

Jupiter is on Cancer 15: A Group Of People Who Have Overeaten And Enjoyed It. This is the Quest Degree of the US' 4th July chart's Sun. Consumerism, issues of being overweight and generally overdoing things can be the theme. With Jupiter on the Sun of the US, the sabre-rattling has been very loud and many are sick and tired of listening to the war drums and the clamouring for more and more and more of what is going to lead to more and more devastation on our mother earth. We may have 'overeaten' and 'enjoyed it', or, we may feel like we need a break from all the things that we find shoved down our throats.

Keywords: Consumerism. Communal cohesion through indulging in the senses. Satisfied hunger. Commercialism and longing to own things. Eating disorders. The right of everyone to enjoy food and nourishment. Big business. Success. Enjoying “the good life”. Having plenty. Abundance. Temporary fulfillment.

The Caution: Self-indulgence through the senses. The “haves” and the “have-nots”. People going without so that others can have more. Monopolization. Bloating. Feeling that one deserves everything on a platter. Overweight. Bad nourishment. Eating binges. Indigestion. Obsession with ownership. Deprivation. Exploiting resources. Overspending. Gluttony.

Saturn, squaring Mars in Leo, is on Scorpio 8: The Silvery Moon Shining Across A Beautiful Gem Of A Lake. This speaks of the opportunity, the ability or the intense need, of being reflective, observing what's going on. I have had the phrase "It's all smoke and mirrors" on my mind for some days now. Saturn seems to be stirring that allusion/illusion up.

Keywords: Reflections. Mirrors. Things mystical and alluring. The ‘Narcissus’ story. Picturesque scenes. Picture postcard images. Peace and beauty. Halloween and magic. Escapism. Placid emotions. Peace and quiet. Contemplation and meditation. Having a reflective nature. Photographs. Psychic abilities. Hypnotic charm or manipulation.

The Caution: Acting out of moodiness. Losing the plot. Projecting one’s self onto others. Narcissism. Looking at one’s self and others as if in a mirror. Not wanting to see the whole picture. Being superficial. A lack of depth. Seeing everything as a reflection of one’s self.

Uranus has recently spent about two and a half months on Aries 13: A Bomb That Failed To Explode Is Now Safely Hidden From Discovery. This Symbol, like all the Symbols, can be read to imply the opposite - perhaps some "bombs" did go off. Whatever bombs are or aren't going off, we have the opportunity now to look at what we share with others. Raising our voices against the tyranny that passes for leadership is part of this equation now.

Uranus is now on Aries 12: A Flock Of Wild Geese. Spending your time with like-minded people, seeing everyone as part of your flock, heading off to new territories, etc.

There is a destiny that makes us brothers, No one goes his way alone; All that we send into the lives of others, Comes back into our own. ~ Edwin Markham

I met a hundred men going to Delhi and everyone is my brother. ~ Indian Saying

Keywords: Aquarian ideals of brotherhood. Attunement to planetary rhythms. Spirit liberated from matter. Wanting to take off by one’s self, but not being able to. Focused group activity and support. Group mentality, action and agreement. Intuition and telepathy. Choreography. Camaraderie. “Honking” to egg each other on. Flying in the slipstream. Responses to seasonal changes.

The Caution: Following the leader without knowing where one’s going. Never knowing where to land, or where to ground oneself. Wild goose chases. Not recognizing the brotherhood in humanity. Losing a sense of individual identity. Going off in the wrong direction.

Neptune is on Pisces 4: Heavy Traffic Linking Two Seaside Resorts. This can show heavy build ups of traffic, many people heading in the same, or different, directions, etc. It can show linkages between minds, hearts, bodies and can show the traffic of nerves going from head to body. Interestingly for me, I am driving from southern Oregon to San Diego this week where I no doubt will find a lot of 'heavy traffic' :)

Keywords: Going with the flow. Running back and forth. Having to move continually. Pollution and car exhaust. Rush hour and road-rage. Plans for arrivals and departures. Public holidays. Traffic jams. Traffic banking up. Having trouble making left hand turns. Detours. Packing and unpacking. Luggage. Travel itineraries. Impasses. Nervous systems. Urine therapy. Constant phone calls. Switchboard jams. Heat and smog.

The Caution: Creating barriers. Constant traffic stopping the possibility of real human interchange. Claustrophobia. Feeling like there is no escape. Exhaustion due to everyday hustle and bustle. Running out of fuel. Accidents. Taking the long way round. Blockages.

Pluto is still on Capricorn 10: An Albatross Feeding From The Hand Of A Sailor. The question here might be - are you still carrying that thing that holds you down, keeps you back, stops you from flourishing - do you still have that 'albatross' hanging around your neck?

Keywords: Feeding one’s higher nature with good nourishment. Banishing worries, so that one can fly ever higher. Overcoming superstitions or beliefs. Travelers who put themselves at risk in foreign lands or cultures. Talking to anybody anywhere. Sharing one’s bounty. Sailors, boats. Birds. Empathy and sympathy for others. Restoring trust and hope.

The Caution: Manipulating events or people with false nourishment. Having alternative motives for wanting to draw others close. Being extremely afraid of strangers or strange situations. The loss of independence.

The Moon's north node is conjunct (together with) and just two degrees apart from Saturn. This indicates that we are experiencing over these coming months a rather 'fateful' or 'karmic' time. Things start, things end and all manner of possibilities take on new meaning now.

The Moon's north node is on Scorpio 10: A Fellowship Supper Reunites Old Comrades. This can speak of the possibility, or the need, to gather together with old friends, family or perhaps new acquaintances who feel like old friends. This is a very meaningful degree and I often see issues to do with 'past lives' (in whatever form) coming up. Healings can happen through people sharing a meal or a coffee and re-connecting, or perhaps connecting for the first time.

Last, but not least, is Lilith on Cancer 10Lilith forms a Mystic Rectangle between Lilith at Cancer 10, the Moon's south node at Taurus 10 and Pluto at Capricorn 10 and the Moon's north node at Scorpio 10. This is a meeting of Lilith, Pluto and the Nodes - lining up, no doubt, to get us to pay attention to our power, strength and inner knowing. There's a certain feeling of people not wanting to 'take things lying down', but rather standing up and stating what they want and what they will and won't put up with.

The Black Moon Lilith is on Cancer 10: A Large Diamond In The First Stages Of The Cutting Process.

Keywords: Coming to terms with inner worth. Emerging perfection. Beauty that is still a bit “rough around the edges”. Naivety. Beauty that is within, even if it has flaws. Potential. Chopping and grinding away at something to get to the essential truth, potential or reality. Being almost, but not completely, perfect. Reserving judgment. Self-development courses. Knowing where to start. Craftsmanship. Finding the best in everything.

The Caution: Leaving an important job unfinished. Seeing the flaws not the inherent beauty. Being afraid to take the first stab at a project or issue. Being overwhelmed by importance and value. Being overprotective or insecure. Not seeing the whole picture. Things unformed and incomplete. A “diamond in the rough”, someone lacking social polish.

With all that's going on, particularly around the issue of Syria, I pray that peace prevails. I can't imagine that common-sense is going to as it doesn't usually - but, hopefully, there will be no further war.

It seems that all these influences point to family: biological, global, and every other sort. Thank you, Lynda, for the clarity you bring.

Hi Lynda,

I have been reading the articles you publish concerning the Sabian symbols for a while and I just don't get it. Is it astrology? Are there specific dates involved? Or is it a monthly overview of all energies together? Is it for specific signs or for all? When you say "Mercury is on Virgo 24: Mary And Her White Lamb" or "Venus is on Libra 24: A Third Wing On The Left Side Of A Butterfly" is that only for virgo / libra?

I don't know how to use the wisdom written here and I would love it if you could help me out here...

Gratitude,

Karen

Hi Karen,

The Sabian symbols are 360 short pithy descriptions which are associated with the 360 degrees of the zodiac, so that each degree had its own symbolic meaning. The symbols were developed by the astrologer Marc Edmund Jones (1888-1980). Jones himself wrote that he discovered them in 1925 "with the help of clairvoyant powers". Dane Rudhyar played a major role in introducing the symbols to a wider public

The Sabian symbols are useful in an intuitive approach to interpretation. Both Jones and Rudhyar offered esoteric meanings for each symbol, although they differ in their details.

Nowadays there are many astrologers that use these symbols for the interpretation of astrological happenings.

We hope this was helpful. There are many resources on the internet to find out more about this.

Blessings,

Thanks for the reply.. sorry but I still don't get it.. how does a lay person who hasn't studied astrology use this?
gratitude,
Karen

Well, astrology is an old science/system of interpretation of astronomical events and a lot more, therefore you would need to study this deeply before you can make your own interpretations/calculations. However, there are many astrologers, one being Lynda Hill, that have studied these codes and symbols and have interpreted them in order to be offered to people in a modern understandable way. In her book Lynda describes how to use these symbols.

We hope this is helpful.

My understanding of Sabian symbols, Karen, is that no, they are not just for virgo/libra example. Those are where the planets are placed at the moment.

Each 'sign' has a certain number of degrees [i think it's 30?] so the symbols work with the energy of each sign.

If you were to look at your astro chart [I know there are so many types these days, besides tropical and siddereal to begin with, but you can get a free natal chart at astro.com], you would see that each of your planets in their signs and houses, also sits on a specific degree. It is listed in the index that shows where the planets and signs are as well as their aspects, when you print out a copy of your chart. It will say Vir 6 for example. From there, you could look up what the sabian symbol is for that and see how it applies to your life.

I have heard that some astrologers will use the symbols in reference to astrological aspects, too. Ex: when you have two planets in square or opposition to each other, you could look up that aspects 'sabian symbol' and get more information about how that plays out for you personally.
