Freezing Or Frying... Heading Into New Territory Yet Again: December's Gemini Full Moon

Lord, how the day passes! It is like a life, so quickly when we don’t watch it, and so slowly if we do. John Steinbeck

No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn. ~ Hal Borland

If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant, if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome. ~ Anne Bradstreet

I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape - the loneliness of it - the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it - the whole story doesn’t show. ~ Andrew Wyeth

Let us learn to appreciate there will be times when the trees will be bare, and look forward to the time when we may pick the fruit. Anton Chekhov

December's Gemini full Moon occurs on Tuesday December 17. It has been interesting contemplating this full Moon as so many are reporting freezing weather in the northern hemisphere with frost and snow and sub zero temperatures while many parts of the southern hemisphere are reporting record heatwaves, although just last week we had snow (in summer) and freezing temperatures right in the middle of way hotter days.

Both cold and hot would figure into the symbolism of this full Moon as either way it can be hard to move forward, get things done, to feel productive and yet relaxed. The Sabian Symbol is Gemini 26: Winter Frost In The Woods. It is interesting how little we can usually achieve at this time of the year as unless you got in early to book things in advance, we normally have to wait until sometime into January before we can get things going. In Australia, it can even be February before the year gets going as so many take long holidays through January. Here's some joy no matter how cold or hot it is where you are - click here - and here's a bit of a warning that it may be time to slow down - click here.

The following is from my book The Sabian Oracle: 360 Degrees Of Wisdom:

‘Winter Frost in the Woods’ shows things in a dormant stage.'Winter' is a time when energy is being used to reinforce the roots, to strengthen the support system and to build up the nourishment that’s needed for the coming seasonal growth and the fruits of spring and summer. There is no point trying to force growth now, it is not possible, nor is it useful. This is not to say that this is not a valuable time. It is. It can be very easy to lose sight of the importance of each “season”.

In the situation facing you, it may be wise to prepare for more vibrant and expansive times by using this period to ensure that you get rest and recharge your batteries – on every level. Plans you’ve got for accomplishing things now may not work. There may be delays, equipment failures, etc. This can be frustrating. This Symbol says three things: there has been a time of fruitfulness which has passed; this is a time of withdrawal and inner growth; and that a time of new beginnings or fresh developments is surely coming.

Patience is needed for the time being. The ‘Frost’ slows everything down as the temperature drops. Emotions can become dull and you may feel or be less responsive, decisions may be difficult to make because the future seems less certain. You may feel sluggish or find it difficult to get going because your emotions or your body are in need of a recharge.

Use this time to make plans for the future and to test possibilities. It is a good time to pull back and observe how others are coping and consider how to help them or have them help you. Imagine spring coming, with all its warmth and growth – this will give you a sense of hope and confidence in the future.

Keywords: The calm before the dawn. The silence inherent when making a connection with nature in cold, barren times. Barren and cold feelings. Refrigeration and freezing. Serenity. Surviving cold conditions. Feeling like one’s on the outside, freezing. Being lost in the wilderness. Beautiful surrounds. Lack of fertility. Things freezing up. The need to rug up.

The Caution: Denying the natural flow of the season by trying to rush things. Feeling “frozen out”, lost and neglected. Feeling dead lost and buried. Chills in the air. Keeping one’s feelings on ice. Immobility.

No matter where you live, whether you're in the colder climes of the northern hemisphere or the hotter and at times very hot southern hemisphere at the moment, this degree speaks volumes about the need to wait for a minute to let the times, or the conditions, change. I had to add this video from John Belushi - click here (warning: it is completely silly).

Of course, times will change. It could be that one needs to let things settle, to not rush and to check what is really going on.

The Quest Symbol (the degree following) this full Moon is Gemini 27: A Young Gypsy Emerging From The Woods Gazes At Far Cities. This Symbol can give us the impetus (or the desire) to get going with our plans, to move out of the perhaps safe confines of the past, of our history, of our clan, and out into a newer, fresher, perhaps more challenging, environment where there could be more opportunity, more people perhaps (or less, depending on what you're wanting), or a chance to be more authentically yourself by fitting into worlds that welcome you more and more.

Keywords: Dreaming of becoming part of something far-off. Streetwise lessons. New perspectives arising from larger realities. The steps from bohemian to corporate and vice-versa. Learning about credentials, using them to advantage. Things that are far off and distant. Ambition. Prophesy, astrology and tarot. Clairvoyance. Gypsies. Leaving family. Moving out on one’s own.

The Caution: Dissatisfaction and always looking elsewhere. A feeling of being “cast out”. Feeling alienated even amongst friends. Finding your self a long way from home. Difficulty turning back. Being in limbo with a lack of ambition. Not having a family to turn to.

The Karmic Condition (degree before) this full Moon is Gemini 25: A Gardener Trimming Large Palm Trees. This degree speaks of getting rid of things you no longer need, it's about pruning back the useless or the remnants of the past, especially those things that slow down growth or weigh you down.

What can you let go of? What do you need to let go of? What is no longer serving you?

Good thoughts bear good fruit, bad thoughts bear bad fruit and man is his own gardener. ~ James Allen

Keywords: Trimming off nonessentials to get to the bare reality. Caring for one’s possessions. Doing the work simply because it needs to be done. Getting rid of rubbish. Gardening and landscaping. Editing words, thoughts, emotions – superfluous things. Weeding out the unnecessary. Looking after cosmetic appearances.

The Caution: Doing the work because of routine, rather than need. Spending time doing things because of appearances. Neglecting the actual real issues at hand, which may include good nourishment, watering, and caring for physical realities. Doing menial jobs when one could be doing much bigger better ones.

The Sabian Symbol for the Sun at this full Moon is Sagittarius 26: A Flag Bearer In A Battle. What 'battles' are you fighting? Are you flying your flag 'high enough' (or, perhaps, too high)? Are your concerns being heard? Is this the battle you are ready and willing to die on a hill for? Certainly, there are many battles, and many of them worthy, going on at the moment. Whether it's opposing coal seam gas drilling, signing petitions to save the Great Barrier Reef, wondering why people are squabbling over President Obama shaking Raul Castro's hand while the world is seemingly falling apart, trying to get those in authority to do something about Fukushima or getting a divorce or fighting a custody battle, we all have to wave our own flags in some way or another.

We can feel a little 'out-front' and defenceless when this degree is around. The Flag-Bearer is usually the one who is unarmed and is carrying the standard while others feel freer to defend or attack. We may have to consider what battles we can go into and what ones we may have to let slide or others handle.

Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear-not absence of fear. ~ Mark Twain

Keywords: Having the courage of convictions. Standing up for ideals. Representing one’s collective in a worthy cause. Carrying the standard or the ‘Flag’. David and Goliath. Being the messenger. Advocates. Ensigns. Leadership. Self sacrifice. Fighting for political ideals. Flag waving.

The Caution: The sacrificial lamb. Overzealous idealism. Empty shows of courage. The scapegoat. Always being ready to go into battle. Violence. Fanaticism. Stepping out of line. An inability to keep quiet. Not knowing when to back off.

The energies around are very powerful at this time of the year as the Sun is going over the Galactic Centre in the few days following this full Moon. The Quest Symbol of the Sun is Sagittarius 27: A Sculptor's Vision is Slowly But Surely Taking Form. This is a great degree to be on the GC as it is generally assigned in astrology that the GC is, to put it most simply, where the "mind of God" is said to reside. This degree Symbol kicks in just 12 hours after the exact full Moon. The picture to the right is of Walter Russell, an absolute genius and a man who could do anything he turned his mind to, with his statue of Mark Twain.

Mediocrity is self-inflicted. Genius is self-bestowed. ~ Walter Russell

Keywords: Concrete creative manifestation. The Godhead. The Symbol of the Galactic Center. Creating the ‘Vision’. Evolution. Things going from crude beginnings all the way up to concrete outcomes. ‘Sculptors’ and sculptures. Molding shapes and forms. Seeing and visualizing things ahead of their time. Sticking with the vision.

The Caution: Disregard of others’ needs. Unnatural focus on the goal. Being one-eyed about the outcome. Watching a situation, or one’s life “crystallize” into unbending shapes. Having one’s designs set in stone. Sitting back and thinking that things will just magically happen without any effort being made.

The following day, the Sun enters Sagittarius 28. The Symbol is also very evocative for the Galactic Centre (the GC has an orb of about 5 degrees of so): A Splendidly Built Bridge, A Heritage Of Unknown Ages, Still Spans The Wildly Primitive Stream. This is the degree that the GC actually moved onto about a year ago (because of the procession of the equinoxes, the GC stays on a degree for 72 years). This Symbol is telling us that now that we realise that we are 'the sculptors' of our lives, we have to be like a 'bridge' - the bridge between you and God, you and others, you and whatever it is that you want in life. Concentrating on the image of the bridge can help dissolve distances between you and what, or where, you want to be.

We build too many walls and not enough bridges. ~ Isaac Newton

Keywords: Enduring elements from past traditions providing a link with the modern day. Reverence for things of worth that stand as reminders of yesterday. Linking people, places and things with clarity. Connections with the “old country”, or past lives. Beautiful and inspiring landscapes. Getting in touch with people. Ever repeating journeys. Passages across the water. Permanence.

The Caution: Sticking with old and possibly outworn methods, with no new ideas to resolve situations. Themes of buying the “Brooklyn Bridge”. Feeling like one has to continually tread the tried-and-true path without deviating.

Mercury, the ruler of this Gemini full Moon, is on Sagittarius 19: Pelicans, Disturbed By The Garbage Of Men, Move Their Young To A New Habitat. This speaks very much about issues of safety, security, having a roof over your head, feeling looked after and it can show the abuse of younger or more susceptible or fragile individuals. Sometimes we have to move away from those elements of society or humanity that are disturbing and disrupting. This can represent an outer movement (such as literally moving house or away), or, it can show an inner movement away by cutting off and saying no to people, places or situations that may have previously been highlighted in your life.

Keywords: Concerns with survival. The endeavor to achieve mental, physical or emotional well-being or peace. Noise and other irritants that make life difficult. Looking out for the safety and security of one’s children, home or creative ventures. Feeling unsafe with conditions being insecure and unpredictable. Having nowhere to rest. Recycling and reducing rubbish.

The Caution: Mess and rubbish left around. Not being prepared to compromise or cohabit. People not being able to live together. “Fouling of one’s nest”. Being told that things are being done “for your own good” regardless of what you want. Noise driving people out. Leases running out.

Venus is on Capricorn 29: A Woman Reading Tea Leaves. This is quite a 'knowing', perceptive or clairvoyant degree. Venus is going to be on this degree for several days as it turns retrograde on this degree, and is retrograde for 40 days (and 40 nights) on December 22, right before Christmas. This Symbol speaks of being able to pick up or sense what is going on and the need for taking clues from the messages around you.

Where there is tea there is hope. ~ Sir Arthur Pinero

The art of tea is a spiritual one for us to share. ~ Alexandra Stoddart

Keywords: Symbolism opening pathways to the spiritual center. Seeing the signs. Seeing signatures in small things that others miss. Intuition and clairvoyance. Creative visualization. Tea leaves and coffee grinds. Non verbal cues. Rituals. Tea and sympathy.

The Caution: Reliance on superstition or esoteric advice. Constantly seeking assurance. Taking things literally, not symbolically. Looking for answers or significance everywhere. Missing the truly obvious.

Mars is on one of my favourite degrees - Libra 5: A Man Teaching The True Inner Knowledge Of The New World To His Students. This degree is in a fabulous run of degrees that are linked to the Super Galactic Centre which has an orb that spans from the last degree of Virgo through to about Libra 6: A Man Watching His Ideals Take A Concrete Form Before His Inner Vision.

Both of these degrees talk about translating one's teachings or visions into concrete form and passing them on to others. It can, of course, refer to both being the pupil and the teacher. These two are very powerful degrees, but with Mars there and on its way to going retrograde in early March in Libra, what is it that we are paying attention to?

The 'true inner knowledge' or are the gossip mags and news programs and social networks filling your time with a load of useless and vacuous information? The trick is to mould your life to the shape you want it to be. Both the Sun and Mars hold that message at this full Moon, with the Sun on the Galactic Centre in Sagittarius and Mars on the Super Galactic Centre in Libra. What are you learning or teaching? Absorbing or projecting?

Jupiter is retrograde and won't go direct until early March (when Venus goes direct and Mars goes retrograde).

Jupiter is on Cancer 18: A Hen Is Scratching For Her Chicks. This speaks of the need to nourish and tend to the needs of our children and youngsters. It can also talk about working at finding money to care for those who can't (or won't) care for themselves. This is an interesting degree and, curiously, it is the degree that Pluto was on when it was discovered (the story of Persephone and her grain-goddess mother Demeter is shown very much in this Symbol).

Keywords: Searching for sustenance. Being devoted to nurturing small beginnings. Concern for the essential, small details. Repetitive cycles of things that have to be done. Being the “breadwinner”. Doing one’s duty. Being loaded with responsibility. Children. Progeny. Feeding others. Catering. Seeding ideas. Latchkey children. Working long hours.

The Caution: Pointless searching where there is no nourishment. Fussing too much. Not letting people grow up. Neglecting to nourish those who need it. Acting like a mother hen. No life of one’s own. Becoming a martyr for others. Self-sacrifice. ‘Scratching’ for tiny rewards. Co dependence. Tiring responsibilities.

Jupiter has just spent weeks on Cancer 19: A Priest Performing A Marriage Ceremony and issues to do with gay marriage have been on the agenda. In Australia, the ACT (Australian Capital Territory - where the capital of Australia is - Canberra) had passed gay marriage into law but only for a very short time before it was redacted to be in line with the law of the rest of the land.

Many couples were very disappointed, to say the least, but it is certain that it is only a matter of time before marriage between gay couples is legalised. It will be interesting to see what happens when Jupiter passes back over this degree direct next year. Jupiter on this degree has also been reflected in the Royal Commission in Australia looking into the Church's sexual abuse of children. (If we look, we see several examples of the Symbols showing themselves in the news and media.)

Saturn is on Scorpio 19: A Parrot Listening And Then Talking Repeats A Conversation He Has Overheard. This is an interesting degree and it seems to be asking us not to repeat gossip or unconfirmed bits of news or ideas that don't hold any weight. We are being asked to not get into the mindless repeating of societal or political lines. (The fake deaf translator at Nelson Mandela's funeral service comes to mind here).

INTERPRETER, n. One who enables two persons of different languages to understand each other by repeating to each other what it would have been to the interpreter’s advantage for the other to have said. Ambrose Bierce

Accept your genius and say what you think. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted then used against you. ~ Bumper sticker

Keywords: Transmitting information or knowledge. The need to integrate things into consciousness. Recorded messages. Answering and fax machines. Mumbling that is difficult to understand. Translators, birds, parrots, news reporters, gossips, stool pigeons. Telephone operators. Messages from strange places. Automated responses.

The Caution: Rote responses that are ill considered. “Towing the party line” without having any opinion of your own. Going over the same territory. Losing true meaning through repetition. Repeating without knowing the real meaning or purpose. Meaningless banter. Tunnel vision. Gossiping. Missing the true essence of what’s being said. Not having a mind of one’s own. Brainwashing. Re-runs of the same old line. Broken records.

Uranus is on Aries 9: A Seer Gazes Into A Crystal Ball In Front Of Him. Uranus has been on this degree for what seems to be forever. Uranus here is asking us to take notice of what is going on; to look deeply into things, to not just take things at surface value and to see below the obvious.

Keywords: Flashes of inspiration. Tuning in and looking within for answers. Creative visualizations. Aura readings. Cutting through irrelevant messages. Looking carefully at structure. Seeking perfection. Clairvoyance. Illumination and deep insights. Looking ahead to see the signs.

The Caution: Confused by literal meanings. Not seeing the symbolic message. Always looking this way and that, not at the center. Getting lost in the big picture. Daydreaming and ignoring what’s really going on. Obsessing over what may happen. Needing to know what’s coming up. Being impatient.

Neptune is on Pisces 3: A Petrified Forest, An Eternal Record Of A Life Lived Long Ago. Neptune has also spent a considerable amount of time on this degree over the last few years. This Symbol brings up issues or memories from the past. What is worth holding onto and what needs to be thrown out? What 'records' are worth keeping and what in your storehouse holds you back (or down) and stops you from moving forward?

Even God cannot change the past. ~ Agathon

Keywords: Remnants from the past. Stillness. Agelessness. Plastic surgery. Being able to withstand life’s storms. Resilience. Crystals, diamonds, gemstones. Beauty that remains ageless. Wood and lacquered wood. Coal, oil and petrochemicals. Diets. Dependability. Family histories. Keeping records. Amber. Fossils. Geology. Archeology. Ancient remnants. Mental and emotional filing cabinets. Lingering evidence. Petrified wood. Photographs and photography. Stones. Stone monuments.

The Caution: Rigidity, immobility, inflexibility. Being frozen. Not letting go of difficulties. Hanging on for grim death. Feeling stuck or frozen. Destroying things that are old. Severing links to the past. Keeping tabs. Memories that destroy the present.

Pluto is on Capricorn 11: Pheasants Display Their Brilliant Colors On A Private Estate. This can show the appreciation of form, beauty and culture all the way to snobbery, big business and the big end of town and the monopolising of wealth and robbing the poor to satisfy the needs of the rich. Whatever this Symbol may represent in the world at this time, it also shows the ability to show your true self, your 'true colors', to be able to enjoy a sense of wealth, privilege and enjoyment of life. Homes filled with love that are beautiful, with lots of color and joy are the perfect antidote to any feelings of lack or loss.

Keywords: Glorious houses and estates. Lawns and gardens. Statues and birdbaths. Peacocks, pheasants, swans, etc. Enjoying the riches the environment offers. Large plots of land. Nature reserves. Game birds. Aristocracy and the ruling elite. Beauty, elegance and grace. Fabulous displays of color. Parks.

The Caution: Foolish disregard of pending danger. Feeling that one has to be “on parade” or else they will be overlooked. Issues of standing out from the crowd. Jealousy and envy through things on display. Luxury and beauty or snobbery that excludes. Showing off. “Do not enter” signs.

The Moon's north node is onScorpio 7: Deep-Sea Divers With Special Machinery. This is a very perceptive degree and it brings us the possibility (and probably the necessity) of looking deeply into things, to get below the surface and see what is really doing on.

Keywords: Studying unconscious energies. Uncovering wonders. Breath meditations and techniques. Plunging in. Seeing things that others don’t. Having the special insights, talents or technology to affect healings on deep levels. New levels of experience seen and felt. Atlantis and Lemuria. Breathing apparatus. Getting “the bends” and cramping up. Inner space.

The Caution: Pretending to plumb the depths, but only for show. Escapism. Going over the top emotionally. Being unreachable by shutting off to the outside world. Feeling gloomy. No light, no oxygen. Losing touch with reality or the real world. Feeling like you’re in a bubble. Isolation and dark thoughts. Not seeing the full picture.

Chiron is on Pisces 10: An Aviator In The Clouds. Chiron has spent a long time on this degree as well. Chiron here can picture being able to rise above situations in order to have a good look at it all all the way to evading the reality of what's going on and pretending that things are different than they really are.

Keywords: Elevated views. Always seeing the best in people and things. Peace and tranquility. The longing for transcendence. Not seeing limitations. Being in a refined “head space”. Mastery. Flight, planes, pilots. Avoidance of time constraints. Pollyanna attitudes. Free flights of fantasy and escapism. The need for accurate navigation. Being in charge of the controls. Seeking higher truths. Maps. Compasses. Global satellite positioning.

The Caution: Sailing through difficulties or missing what’s really going on. Escapist use of alcohol and drugs, etc. Lack of grounded energy or reality. Being unearthed. Escaping responsibilities. Isolating oneself. Completely missing the point. Feeling high and mighty and above everyone else, particularly with intellectual skills. Wrong turns. Missing the signs.

This is an interesting full Moon - but then I guess they all are. Right before Christmas, on the 22nd, Venus turns retrograde and it will be in retrograde motion for 40 days (and 40 nights as has been observed by many). We are being given a chance to rethink our relationships, our feelings about money and our belongings and our values along with finding ways and means of being practical about our needs and desires as Venus is in Capricorn.

What clues are you finding with Venus on A Woman Reading Tea Leaves? Are you paying attention to the messages and meanings that are being broadcast around you? Remembering to take notice of what's going on at a deeper level seems to be the major message of this period, along with knowing that if the ground is 'frozen over' and growth seems to be delayed (no matter if you're in winter or in summer), this is a time for letting go of control and being with loved ones. After all, that is what this time of the year is all about.

I want to thank everyone for their wonderful feedback and support. I have had a difficult year but I'm still in the game and looking forward to 2014. I wish you all a fabulous holiday season and hope you have a lovely time with family and friends and have plenty to celebrate about as we head into 2014.

Thank you for your informative posts, Lynda. They sometimes take me a while to get through (understand)...I keep plugging away and re-reading and eventually they do and I'm better for them.

I'm sorry to hear the year has been rough for you, too.

Here's to 2014!
Peace and much Love!

Thank you Lynda for another wonderful article. I learn so much about astrology from you and the significance of each degree. It was fascinating and insightful for me to read about what bridges symbolize as I've always loved bridges and just recently bought a picture of a bridge and hung it in my living room. I will forever visualize bridges as my connection with God and all that I love and wish to have in my life. Thank you so much for this :)

Truly and with Love,
