Stepping Up To The Plate & Stepping Through The Gate: April's Aries New Moon

Power is not revealed by striking hard or often, but by striking true. Honore de Balzac

In fighting and in everyday life you should be determined though calm. Meet the situation without tenseness yet not recklessly, your spirit settled yet unbiased. An elevated spirit is weak and a low spirit is weak. Do not let the enemy see your spirit. Miyamoto Musashi

He that wrestles with us strengthens our nerves, and sharpens our skill. Our antagonist is our helper. Edmund Burke

Come up with a smiling face, It’s nothing against you to fall down flat, but to lie there–that’s disgrace. Edward Vance Cooke

He who fights and runs away may live to fight another day. Proverb

If you cannot bite, never show your teeth. Proverb

Sure there have been injuries and deaths in boxing–but none of them serious. Alan Minter–boxer

Occurring on April 10, the Aries new Moon is another very powerful lunation. With such a line-up in Aries - Uranus, the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Eris and Venus all in Aries - the energies are bound to be heightened, to say the least. This is a great time to put your best foot forward; to take on the world, your dreams and desires, and the things that give you a greater expression of your individual attributes, talent and beauty.

The major theme is one of stepping up to the plate and stepping up to the gate.

The Sabian Symbol for the new Moon is Aries 21: A Boxer Is Entering The Ring. This Symbol sounds very much like one is taking on a fight, but it can also denote being prepared to step up to the plate in order to get what you want. It doesn't have to foretell fighting, it can as easily be taking on a project, relationship, cause, or anything that requires one to step into the ring.

The following is from my book The Sabian Oracle: 360 Degrees Of Wisdom

It may be time to fight about some issue, but it should be done within the bounds of the ‘Ring’ – heeding the rules and regulations of decency. Make sure you possess the skills and have earned the right to defend what you believe. Are “rules” being broken? Is there someone keen to battle? Are they causing problems? At times it may be appropriate or necessary to physically “fight” but merely signaling your readiness to fight may cause the other to back down. If you really need to go into the ‘Ring’ be fully prepared for any consequences. Be aware that you may need to back off if you are losing ground. Standing up to something or someone can lead to a new level of self-confidence, but are you ready for the punches that might be thrown your way? Use your instincts and watch every movement carefully. Knowing where the next punch is coming from can help. Who is the likely victor? Emotionally there are no real winners when lovers or friends fight—both lose in one way or another. It’s often others who judge the real outcome or who’s the “winner” in the end. Are you prepared to lose? It could be a situation of “may the best man win”. ‘Boxing’ is a sport that owes its pleasures to people’s glory, bravery, pain and sometimes humiliation; however, standing up for yourself and your rights can lead to others taking you more seriously.

Keywords: Physical or psychological self-assertion and determination. Attack or defense? Fighting for emotional, psychological or physical space. Being seen as a person of strength. Throwing punches. Fighting on any level. Being prepared to take a swing at someone or something. Stepping up to the plate. Throwing down the gauntlet. Going after the title. Big vs. small egos.

The Caution: Using force or power to dominate people or those who challenge. Acting in a combative manner. Not displaying sportsmanship. Wanting to knock people out. Looking for combat. Throwing punches at anything. Belting, smacking, invading. Being punch-drunk.

Having seen Paul Simon perform last weekend, I'm reminded of this song

In the clearing stands a boxer And a fighter by his trade And he carries the reminders Of ev'ry glove that layed him down Or cut him till he cried out In his anger and his shame "I am leaving, I am leaving" But the fighter still remains Lie la lie ... Simon and Garfunkel - The Boxer

(Click here for youtube video of The Boxer)

Having quoted all the above, this new Moon can be about the desire to drop the fight, to be able to win your own 'championship belt', to step up, to take on your dreams and wishes, to fulfill your destiny.

I saw this on television as I was writing the above. I found it very amusing and completely silly. Click here. We had just had a conversation with some guests about whether it was worth watching the football. It made me laugh out loud.

The Quest Symbol (the degree following) this new Moon is Aries 22: The Gate Opens To The Garden Of All Fulfilled Desires. This is where we get the opportunity to step up to the gate of our desires, to arrive at a place where we can make the transition to a happier life, with more rewards, beauty, joy, love, peace and deliverance.

I have long seen these two Symbols as strong and amazing signs and affirmations of taking on the new, asserting yourself and your desires and finding a sense of happiness, adventure and rewards. Aries 22 is one of my favourite degrees. It can bring wonderful rewards, accomplishments and love. It helps to get straight about what your "All Fulfilled Desires" may be. Making some big decisions, affirmations or dropping issues from the past that no longer work is key to opening that gate.

Paradise is always where love dwells. Jean Paul F. Richter

When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us. Alexander Graham Bell

There are things known, and there are things unknown. And in between are the doors. Jim Morrison

If you haven’t all the things you want, be grateful for the things you don’t have that you wouldn’t want. Anon

Be an opener of doors. Ralph Waldo Emerson

quoting Aries 22: The Gate Opens To The Garden Of All Fulfilled Desires from my book:

What and where is the place you strive for? It seems that you have brought yourself to what you want, but there may still be obstacles. There may be fear about just what ‘All Fulfilled Desires’ may actually represent. Maybe you already have everything you need—take a look around and ask yourself this. Are you ready and willing to accept the rewards? Perhaps you need to make the deliberate action of opening the ‘Gate’, allowing entry to where you belong and where you want to be. It can often be difficult accepting or admitting what we really want, especially to ourselves. You may be used to (or addicted to) being in a difficult or unfulfilling situation or relationship. Can you cope with the more rewarding possibilities that lie beyond any barriers? As this ‘Gate’ opens (in your mind, your emotions or literally) you’ll find you’ve come to a new threshold, possibly a whole new beginning in life. Often there needs to be a pause, a reflection of how real or rewarding this new place is that you are about to enter. Perhaps you need to knock first, showing your clear intention of “wanting in”. Then you can take that step towards what you want. Be prepared to tend to your ‘Garden of Fulfilled Desires’.

Keywords: Craving happiness. Gardens and their treasures. Trellises and flowing plants. Pathways to bliss. Gates and doors. Unlocking and opening gates and doors. Analyzing your heart’s desires. The grass being greener on the other side. Rewards and treasures waiting. The allure of somewhere else. Initiations. Passages to a better life. Acquiring property. Sexual fulfillment. Opening up to life’s possibilities and rewards.

The Caution: Feeling or being shut out. Denying yourself the right to just rewards. Wild ‘goose-chases’. Being afraid of losing everything. Having everything, but wanting more. Things not being as real as you imagined. Feeling unhinged. Not having the materials to make dreams come true. Issues of possession that separate. Your cup being half-empty or half-full.

Venus and Mars are leading the way for this new Moon. This is because Venus and Mars in Aries are traveling over The Boxer and The Gate degrees in the few days in the lead-up to the new Moon. They are preparing the path and it may bring a breakthrough of realisations around what you do and don't want, what makes you joyous and what makes you unhappy, what fulfills you or what compromises your sense of authority or authenticity.

On the mundane or world stage, we see posturing from North Korea with threats of them entering the ring with their 'dukes up'. With Venus (which can, when Venus is being gnarly, show "I want what you've got" or "I want to show you what I've got") and Mars so closely aligned with the new Moon in Aries, there are likely to be some fairly incendiary events. Mars can bring explosions and exposing issues or problems. With a strong broadcast of love and acceptance, the difficulties that Mars can bring will be blown away.

Mars is on Aries 23: A Woman In Pastel Colours Carrying A Heavy But Valuable Load. This Symbol can picture someone shouldering difficulties and wearing a smile. Valuable lessons can be learnt around shouldering the load, feeling hard done by, needing to lighten one's perspective or being able to say no without getting upset about it.

Often, that 'Valuable Load' is something wonderfully promising. It can be like a pregnancy - sometimes we are ripe with possibility when this degree is around. As Mars is on it, there's possibly a need to lighten up, to pass responsibilities or loads on to those who should really be carrying them. Mars can bring anger, disappointment, depression and frustration, but it can also bring ambition, drive, the will to assert yourself and all kinds of breakthroughs in understanding, especially around where we may be carrying burdens from the past that no longer serve us.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Keywords: Privacy. Quiet determination to get on with the job. Mild manners. Carrying more than one’s share, gratefully or grudgingly. Shouldering problems. Bad backs. Victim status – poor me! Secret pregnancies. Doing overtime. Heavy loads. Smiling against the odds. Pastel colors. Codes of silence.

The Caution: Covering something up. Trying to conceal distrust. Keeping one’s thoughts and emotions locked-in creating ill health and disease. Fading into the background. Not being noticed or recognized. Feeling weighed down with shame, loss or humiliation. Wearing dark clothes. Dressing in order to cover up. Being the family scapegoat. Heavy karma.

Mars is on the same degree as Eris (more on the mythology of Eris here) - Eris is the goddess of discord and strife and she can bring some big lessons with both Mars and Venus conjunct (together with) her. Eris could see things being stirred up somewhat, especially if there is anger and upset that's clouding the picture. Things can get out of hand if anger and disappointment are stuffed down, especially as Eris sits for a very long time on A Woman In Pastel Colours, Carrying A Heavy But Valuable Load. Mars and Eris both on this Symbol amplify the need to be heard, to be able to lighten or share your load, to feel accepted rather than shunned, by loved ones or society.

Venus is just one degree ahead of Mars (and Eris). It's on Aries 24: An Open Window And A Net Curtain Blowing Into A Cornucopia. This is a wonderful degree that shows promise. Perhaps it's time to open The Window (as well as The Gate), so that your Cornucopia can manifest itself. Draw aside those curtains and blinds and let the light in.

Keywords: Imagination. Keeping your options open. The promise of fruition. The breath of life filled with inspiration. Realizing that in everyday life, one has it all. Windows of opportunity. Gain, abundance, riches. Spiritual energies pouring in. Concentrated energy. Seeing desires taking shape. Curtains and windows.

The Caution: Relying on spiritual ideas to provide material sustenance. Dreaming of things dropping into one’s lap. Hoping that good luck will just ‘blow in’. Shutting windows, keeping light and life out. Drawing curtains and withdrawing. Promises, promises.

Mercury is on Pisces 25: The Purging Of The Priesthood. This can show the need, or the desire, to remove people from your life, to get rid of bad, difficult or disruptive influences, or to move on from situations where certain people are not serving your good. This can be painful, but also liberating. Realisations around 'the emperor having no clothes' can reveal where people in your life may not be fulfilling their roles, or, have abused their power, or outlived their stay.

The ongoing revelations and investigations of abuse by the church and other institutions are bound to lead to some red faces and falls from grace. Those that abuse their positions can find their deeds coming to light.

Keywords: Revealing the truth of people for who and what they truly are. Cutting people off. Throwing out things that don’t measure up. Forced retirement and redundancies. Payouts at the end of employment. Dismissals. Opting out for moral reasons. Being fired. Holes left where someone took up a lot of space.

The Caution: Stressful battle over who’s in charge. Blackmail. The threat of being thrown out. Something being revealed. Evicting people because they deceive, lie or mislead or just because they’re not liked. Bringing somebody down. Scapegoating others. Corruption and scandal that threaten collapse. Wanting to appear to be doing the right thing. Cover ups. The burning of books. Perversion.

Letting go of situations, things or people that are no longer a positive presence in your life is shown even more by the Quest Symbol of Mercury. It's Pisces 26: The New Moon Reveals That It Is Time For People To Go Ahead With Their Different Projects. Mercury moves onto this degree very shortly after the new Moon. This, and the former degree, are both ones of letting go of that which is no longer working. Being discriminating is key as one doesn't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. It's timely that Mercury is smack on this degree for the new Moon (the Symbols can be like that).

Keywords: Diversifying. Applying talents in a different direction. People splitting up and splitting off. New opportunities and potentials. The beginning of a new age. Letting go of the old and outworn. Separations. Embracing one’s future without the need for others. Coming to a fork in the road. Divorces. New jobs, directions and destinies. The dawning of a new era.

The Caution: Not giving, or receiving emotional support. Feeling split off and alone, even when one is with others. The fear and loathing of possible separation. Overthrowing the old too quickly. Changing direction unexpectedly. The fear of old age. Relationships that fail again and again.

Jupiter is on a degree that speaks of clairvoyance, clairsentience, synchronicity and sharing thoughts and feelings with others, whether across great distances or just across the room. Jupiter is on Gemini 14: Two People Far Apart In Telepathic Communication. Jupiter transited and retrograded over this degree for several weeks last year (August and September and again in November). Venus also transited and retrograded over this degree last year (April, June and July). People can feel very drawn to each other, whether they live close to each other or far apart, many will have felt a magnetic pull to others. Many have felt a big increase in their clairvoyant abilities, often with surprising results. With abundant, expansive and rewarding Jupiter on this degree, paying attention to your intuition can bring breakthroughs in understanding and many times a healing in relationships as people pick up on each other's vibrations.

Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking together in the same direction. Antoine De Saint-Exupery

To the query, “What is a friend?” his reply was “A single soul dwelling in two bodies.” Aristotle

Great minds think alike. Traditional Proverb

Keywords: Conquering space and time limitations. Psychic and mental communication. Sharing and thinking the same ideas. Knowing what is felt or thought by others. Feeling connected regardless of physical contact. Being on the same frequency. Medium ship. Telepathic communication. Conversation. Direct lines of communication. Mind reading.

The Caution: Blocking out sensitive awareness for the sake of social needs or expectations. Mind and thought control. Manipulating by subtle means. Losing contact. Not getting the message. Not seeing eye-to-eye. Barging into other people’s space.

Saturn is retrograde (seemingly traveling backwards and moving slowly) on Scorpio 10: A Fellowship Supper That Reunites Old Comrades. This is a rather 'karmic' degree, it brings people together who belong together, even if it is only for a short while. Saturn can bring karmic issues to the surface, so having Saturn retrograding slowly over this degree makes this an especially meaningful time.

Friendships develop over food and wine. Prince Nicholas Romanoff

With true friends . . . even water drunk together is sweet enough. Chinese Proverb

Keywords: Renewing bonds with those you’ve shared struggles. Past life connections. Feeling like you’ve known someone for lifetimes. Reaching out to others. Having a million and one things to talk about. Reunions and memories. Talking about the past. Sharing meals. Drinking wine. The Last Supper. Partaking in the gifts of special relationships. Fated meetings.

The Caution: Only feeling comfortable with the past. Resisting joining with others. Feeling like a loner, with no one to share the good things in life. Being uneasy about having to face old comrades or adversaries. Secrets being revealed. Gossip that belittles others. Breaking the ice.

Saturn here can have us renewing old bonds, or desiring the reunion. It can also bring a sense of loneliness if there's no one special to break bread with. Surprises can come, though, as the karmic nature of both Saturn and the Symbol combine and magic can be in the air, especially if there's a healing felt around gathering together.

Uranus adds to the line-up in Aries. It's on Aries 10: A Teacher Gives New Symbolic Forms To Traditional Images. Uranus here is asking that we write the story, cast a new light on subjects, transform old stories into new ones and generally rewrite the book. What in your life needs to be rewritten? Changed, updated or transformed?

Keywords: New dimensions breaking old thought forms or behavior. Quantum science. Innovation and re-creation. Working with educational tools. Finding new inspiration. Being “ahead of one’s time”. New-age consciousness. Ideas out of the past for the future. Sticking one’s neck out. Rewriting the book.

The Caution: Rejecting old ideas because they are old instead of reforming them. Throwing things of worth out, without examining them. Having little respect for things that are really worthwhile or traditional. Sticking with the tried and true, no matter what. Thinking that no one will be interested in your ideas. Heresy. Dogma.

Neptune is on Pisces 5: The Church Bazaar. This speaks of charity, giving of one's self for higher causes, issues of worth and how much you are prepared to do for others, being able to charge for one's gifts, coming together for community causes, etc. The trick with Neptune here is not to undersell yourself, but also to know when to give without thought of receiving - sometimes a tricky balance.

Keywords: Overcoming loneliness and alienation. Selling things. The issue of real worth. A lot of effort for small rewards. Small scale commercial bartering and interchange. The collection plate. Generosity and charitable community attitudes. Jars of jam and things handmade. Bric-a-brac. Bargains. Practical spirituality. Volunteers. People sharing the load. Charity work. Money raising. Garage or yard sales. Second hand clothes.

The Caution: Spiritual or social exclusivity. Giving things smaller worth than they deserve. Using people. Deception on the grounds of faith. Fussing about small details. Fighting over “position”. Issues of territory. Pushy people. Social boundaries that exclude some.

Pluto is on Capricorn 12: A Student Of Nature Lecturing, Revealing Little Known Aspects Of Nature. Issues to do with climate change, gas fracking and oil spills, natural medicines, the wonders of the world, etc, are likely to be around. Whether you're a student or a lecturer, there's much to be learnt from the natural wonders of the world.

Keywords: Observing and translating so others may learn. Green politics. Issues the conservatives don’t want revealed. Nature and natural remedies. Science and its rewards and drawbacks. Issues such as global warming. Whistle blowers. Natural healing methods. Documentaries. Conspiracy theories.

The Caution: Radical non-humanistic views. Intellectual smugness. ‘Lecturing’ and browbeating. Modern technological advances that stifle the environment. Lip service to conservation issues.

Chiron is on Pisces 12: An Examination Of Initiates In The Sanctuary Of An Occult Brotherhood. Chiron is known as the Wounded Healer and I see it very much as The Stories We Tell Ourselves. A lot can be learnt and realised now about your self worth, how you fit in, to drop the judgment of yourself and others and to take your rightful place.

These are the times that try men’s souls. Thomas Paine

Keywords: The ordeal that comes to any initiate for entrance into higher realms of being. Hermits. Tests, examinations, having to prove oneself. Being judged or being judgmental. Being cross-examined. Rarefied atmospheres that demand personal sacrifice. Initiations. Proving courage and purity. Trials. The attainment of knowledge. Apprenticeships. Being a candidate. Finding out how and where one fits in. One-eyed dedication. Trial by media. Cults. Rituals.

The Caution: Refusing advice. Arrogance. People saying “I told you so”. Invading other’s private space. Hiding away because of fear or social ridicule. Severe trials and tests that strip the joy of life. People assuming they know the truth about others. Fear of failure. Not living up to other’s expectations. Narrow mindedness. Harsh treatment. Going without.

The Moon's north node talks of the need to be able to cater to your needs and the needs of those close to you. It's on Scorpio 17: A Woman The Father Of Her Own Child. This speaks of being self sufficient, strong, and, sometimes, single parenthood. It can also show being by yourself and ensuring that you can have your needs met.

I don’t need anyone to rectify my existence. The most profound relationship we will ever have is the one with ourselves. Shirley MacLaine

Keywords: Single parenthood. Being proud of one’s individuality. Feeling capable of anything. Spiritual experiences that fill one with one’s own spirit. Self-reliance. The lack of a father figure. Invitro fertilization. The complications of adoption. Self-sufficiency. Facing the world feeling whole. Having the right to determine one’s future. The story of the conception of Jesus.

The Caution: Uncompromising feminism or chauvinism. Feeling like one has to be responsible for everything. Unrealistic independence. Being left alone and abandoned. Having no one to turn to for support. Being an adult before one’s time.

This is a very meaningful time. What will you do in order to step up to your Garden Of All Fulfilled Desires?
