The End Of Civilization As We Know It: The New Moon On The Cusp Of The Aquarian Age

Civilization consists in the multiplication and refinement of human wants. Robert Millikan

Strategy should evolve out of the mud of the marketplace, not in the antiseptic environment of an ivory tower. Al Ries

He that does not ask will never get a bargain. French Proverb

Everything is worth what its purchaser will pay for it. Publius Syrus

The market came with the dawn of civilization and it is not an invention of capitalism… If it leads to improving the well being of the people there is no contradiction with socialism. Mikhail Gorbachev

The market is a place set apart where men may deceive each other. Diogenes Laertius

If it should turn out that we have mishandled our own lives as several civilizations before us have done, it seems a pity that we should involve the violet and the tree frog in our departure. Loren Eiseley

February's new Moon is a very, very, curious one. Occurring on February 18 in the United States and February 19 in Australia, it is right smack on the *very last minute* of Aquarius = 29Aquarius59. One minute after the exact new Moon, the Moon moves into Pisces and the Sun moves into Pisces two minutes later. To call this an Aquarian new Moon is, I believe, a misnomer = this is a Piscean new Moon - and how entirely Piscean it is as the first planet the Moon and then the Sun transits over after the new Moon is Neptune (the ruler of Pisces) in Pisces.

OK, so I've looked at this new Moon a few times and I can't, in all good conscience, call this an Aquarian new Moon... we do have quite a strong influence of Aquarius still happening, though, as Mercury, having been retrograde, is now travelling direct over the degrees it went direct and then retrograde over in the last few months. Aquarius has been getting quite a bit of an airing (indeed, a work-over) through Mercury lately and the major themes are removing our masks, being more authentic about ourselves and demanding authenticity of others and leaving situations that no longer work for us. You can listen to my Soundcloud voice recording of this latest Mercury retrograde period here

Further, and interestingly, I don't know why, perhaps it's because of the ongoing weirdness around climate change and climate events and the concern of the ruining of the environment and the end of civilization - or whatever - but I feel to mention that this last gasp of Aquarius is smack where the Aquarian Age begins. Whenever that is - we don't actually *know*... there's heaps of speculation and the beginning guesses vary around 250 years or more. Besides, it's a long cuspal period and it would be totally silly, specious, to link the Aquarian Age to this new Moon (although I just did it :) ).

Why I'm tying it in at all is because of the symbology of this cusp. Aquarius 30, which is the first degree of the Aquarian Age (the Ages move backwards through the zodiac) speaks of the ruination, change, end - whatever words we want to put on it - of civilization... or the breaking down of it, at least. More on Aquarius 30 below...

The last degree of the Piscean Age, Pisces 1: A Crowded Public Market Place, can show many things - amongst them, obviously, markets and marketing, money and power, corruption and damage to the environment for big business, the abuses caused by big markets, insurance companies, jails run by big business, etc. Of course, there are fabulously wonderful things to be found in The Large Public Market - fresh produce, lovely things that sparkle and reward, employment, work, nourishment and sustenance of all kinds. But, what we're seeing at this point of our evolution are largely abusive to our sense of selves and our environment and our sensibilities. It's a very interesting cusp, this one. Again, of course, this new Moon is not necessarily ringing in the beginning, or the middle or whatever, of the cusp of the Aquarius Age. It does, however bring up many of those issues and it can be interesting to observe them in that light.

So please do excuse my indulgence in speaking about the Aquarian Age with this new Moon ...the cusp of the Aquarian Age is so big, we will, in our short 80-100 years on the planet, only experience a small part of it.

So, having said all that, the Sabian Symbol for this new moon is Pisces 1: A Crowded Public Market Place. The following is from my book The Sabian Oracle: 360 Degrees Of Wisdom -

‘A Crowded Public Market Place’ brings to mind images of people bargaining, buying, selling
and looking at the products for sale and exchanging thoughts and pleasantries. In a ‘Public Market Place’ many different things are on display, depending on the current economy and how well people’s needs can be met. As the ‘Market’ is ‘Crowded’, there are many people bustling as they move around. People come together, meet each other, and learn about life in their community. They keep up with the news of what’s going on while bargaining or buying food, clothing and other necessities.

This pictures products being available for sale, barter or investment. Depending on how you see things, the best–and possibly also the worst–aspects of the products available to the community are on display. You may be able to contribute as well as benefit from this. Getting yourself or your products “out there” where they can be appreciated will get you into the game – or is it just the rat race? What can you do to ensure that you can get a fair share of the rewards or the money changing hands? If you are a salesperson, are you prepared to have your “wares” out in the open where they can be criticized and evaluated? If you are a buyer, it is likely that you will find what you’re looking for, and possibly more, if you look long enough. Do you know how to bargain, close the sale and get the best deal? There may be questions as to whether things are worth the price placed on them. Ensuring that whatever you have to sell or buy is worthwhile, on all levels – the emotional, mental, physical or spiritual, will protect your good name, reputation or financial status. Are gains and investments equally balanced?

Keywords: Human interchange. Bartering. Commercialism. Shopping centers, markets. The Internet. People fulfilling each other’s desires. Buyers and sellers. Classifieds. Consumables. Money changing hands. Products of all kinds. Globalization—its rewards and trappings. Shops and landlords. Storage, stockpiles and stocktaking. Bargains and bargaining. The rules of fair trade. Competition. Public opinion. The economy. Trade embargoes. Big business. The Stock market. Advertising.

Call someone your lord and he’ll sell you in the slave market. Saudi Arabian Proverb

The Caution: Being too stingy or greedy to share benefits. Airing ones “laundry”, emotions or possessions in public. Panicking from feeling “crowded in”. Exploiting for greed. Disputes over costs. Monopolies. Not letting anything get in the way of making a buck. Always bargaining for one’s own advantage. Ripoffs. Sweatshops. Being too busy to enjoy people. The extortion of banks, insurance companies, big business. Usury.

A new Moon occurs when the Sun and the Moon are on the same exact degree of the zodiac (in conjunction). A new Moon symbolizes: New beginnings, seeds being planted, moving away from old conditions, projects launched, ideas given power to get going, the slow but steady building of power, it's the perfect time for affirmations and resolutions. The effects of a new Moon last for at least an entire month and often way longer as anything started this month can take the flavour of the symbolism into the future.

Moon symbolizes: Emotions, moods, mother, family, clan, domestic issues, relationship to home and country. Feelings, sentiments, nourishment, emotional nurturing, monkey chatter mind, lunar and menstrual cycles, clarity of emotions or lunacy. Female energy - yours and others.

Sun symbolizes: One’s core center, spirit, heart, issues to do with father, men, self, ego, your male side. How you radiate your sense of being. What others see, how you are recognized or remembered, sense of identity and connection with male energy - yours and others.

The Karmic Condition (the degree before) of this new Moon is Aquarius 30: Moonlit Fields, Once Babylon, Are Blooming White

More than any time in history mankind faces a crossroads. One path leads to despair and utter hopelessness, the other to total extinction. Let us pray that we have the wisdom to choose correctly. Woody Allen

This Symbol is an expression of purity, innocence and the fruits of the past. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were a magnificent structure that long ago celebrated the rule of human culture. The Gardens were said to be enormous structures with incredibly intricate watering systems. They are one of the Wonders of the Ancient World. Whether real or not, these gardens appeal to the human desire to return to the simple and exquisite life of the Garden of Eden, a life of earthly paradise. The myth of an original garden with perfumed trees and luscious fruits, birds and animal life, and rivers of life-giving waters is common to many faiths including Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Many great advances come out of this region, including language, astronomy and mathematics. Long after Babylon's fall and the man-made structures disappeared, mere remnants of the garden that was 'Once Babylon' remain.

Keywords: Rewards coming through from past generations. The feeling of ancestors surrounding one's present deeds. Alchemy. Loss of ancient civilizations. Reverence for things from the past. The Middle East and all things middle-eastern. Belly-dancing. Rebirths of old civilizations. Grandeur. Seeds of the past becoming flowers and fruits of the present. Records. Fields that were once Avalon.

The Caution: Disbelieving because there are no rational structures or support. Destroying ancient lands or monuments because of religious beliefs or greed. The devastation and ruin of Iraq in order for the modern world to succeed. Projecting the sins of the world onto people or places that are foreign. Climate change. Destroying ancient sites. The destruction of the environment.

Mercury is on Aquarius 5: A Council Of Ancestors Has Been Called To Guide A Man - this is one of my favourite degrees - it speaks of being guided, having the wisdom of the 'ancestors' around us. These can be people who have passed over, and/or, it can show those who are still very much with us, older or younger, wiser - perhaps more mature, perhaps with a lesson sent to teach us something.

The 'Council of Ancestors Has Been Called to Guide a Man' implies faith, trust and hope in the wisdom and understanding of those who have gone before. The wisdom of the 'Council of Ancestors' is often invoked in tribal spiritual practice. With this Symbol, whenever there is a need for guidance, wisdom or knowledge, whether it is in the present or from the spirit world, the energy of the elders can 'Guide' us. This 'Guidance' often comes from the 'Ancestors' who have passed on, but can also originate from the knowledgeable ones that are still among us.

Keywords: Inner knowledge. Instruction. Direct tap roots to deep sources of energy. Karmic connections with the past. The place one comes from. Ancient wisdom versus "old fogies". Parents and grandparents. Families and family lineage. Proving bloodlines. Committees, boards and councils. Memories of those who've gone before. The Akashic records.

The Caution: Reliance on conservatism. Obsolete boards of authority. Not being able to move with the times. Needing the nod of approval from others to validate what one's doing. Not being free to do what one wants. Having to please the elders in some way. Bound by family or past-life karma. Nagging negativity. Old fashioned views that limit expansion.

Mercury symbolizes: Mind, thought, communication, memory, expression, intelligence. News, exchanges, chatting, conversations, short journeys, connections with others, telephones, emails, siblings, neighbors, the reasoning mind. Day-to-day activities. Cars, keys, small animals.

Venus is on Pisces 28: A Fertile Garden Under The Full Moon. This Symbol sheds light on the things we have that we can/should/could/must be grateful for.  It is vital, alive and it paints a very positive picture. This is a very powerful image of the Goddess energy. Not only is it the 'Fertile Garden' of creativity and growing life, but also the gentle light and water energy of 'The Full Moon' is radiating energy through it.

Keywords: Fullness and fertility. Peak of energy and experiences. Brilliantly active unconscious life. Cycles. Waiting for the right time to approach or handle a situation. The effect of the moon. Astrology and predictive practices. The time for harvesting the rewards of hard work. Nature sprites. Vegetables, herbs and nature's bounty.

The Caution: Jealous protection of possessions. Not being able to make one's mind up because of the number of possibilities. Missed opportunities. Difficulty shutting down the mind. Emotions that get out of hand.

Venus symbolizes: Relatedness, cooperation, what attracts you. The experience of sweetness, beauty or delight. Social interactions, love, friends, how you reach out to people. Feminine persona, relationship with mother and females. Money, possessions, sense of values.

Mars is on Pisces 30: A Majestic Rock Formation Resembling A Face Is Idealized By A Boy Who Takes It As His Idea Of Greatness, As He Grows Up, He Begins To Look Like It.

This Symbol shows the ability we have of projecting an ideal or an image into the future. This can be an image of what, or who, we'd like to become. We then grow and emerge into that reality. Mars is set to go into Aries straight after the new Moon, giving added impetus to getting things going.

Keywords: Concrete manifestation of one's ideals. Enduring truths. Culmination of efforts. Projections of ideal images. Wanting to be "big" and successful. Tutankhamen's mask. Wanting a sense of immortality. Defining one's fate through conscious manifestation. Morphing reality to suit an objective. Ambition. The ability to see life in inanimate objects.

The Caution: Not being at all clear about whom one is or what one can be. Becoming a screen for the projection of other's ideals. Stony faces that show the hardships of life. Hardening of one's personality. Stony faces. Idealizing others therefore losing one's own identity.

Mars symbolizes: Drive, determination or agenda, how you get to your goals. How you express and handle anger, ambition, assertion of self and ability to step forward. The male principle, sexuality, the ability to step up to the plate when one needs to. Fight or flight.

Jupiter is on Leo 17: A Volunteer Church Choir Makes Social Event Of A Rehearsal.

The 'Volunteer Church Choir' is pictured. They come together to make a 'Social Event of a Rehearsal'. Although their voices will often hit the right pitch, sometimes they won't. As they are a 'Volunteer Church Choir', the issue is not the quality of people's voices or being able to hold a tune, but more the sharing of voices and the enjoyment that such gatherings can bring. People bring refreshments, skills, possibilities, etc. They network with each other, bringing community and a sense of promise to each other. Criticism of how folks "sing" = ie contribute = should be left at the door. Each and every person should be encouraged to contribute what they can, to raise his or her voice in a celebration of spiritual unity and the enjoyment of life.

Keywords: Making the most of any situation. Feelings of togetherness. Rehearsing without worrying about what might happen. Doing things without thought of reward. Sharing community. Catching up on what others are doing. Busking and street singing. Learning to open up the throat. Charity work. Volunteers. Sharing food and drink. Small gifts for others. Dedication to ideals. Extending yourself by mixing in. Gatherings. Church or school halls.

The Caution: Trivializing the purpose of gatherings. Being afraid or reticent to lift up one's voice. Standing in the background because of the belief that one is not "good" enough to join in. Criticizing others for not contributing enough. Feeling ripped off. Issues of being "in the club".

Jupiter symbolizes: The big picture, expansion, exploration, aspirations, religious and philosophical ideals, issues to do with traveling, foreign lands, people and traditions, culture, education, generosity, luck, abundance, support, optimism. Insight through knowledge and wisdom.

Saturn is on Sagittarius 5: An Old Owl Perched High Up In A Tree

With the ability to twist their heads right around, the wise 'Old Owl' sees all, seeing what others miss, and keeps very quiet whilst digesting all that is going on. Even though they appear to sit quietly, the 'Owl' is able to quickly snare its prey in the flash of a moment. The 'Old Owl' pictured here is 'Perched High Up in a Tree'; he is far from the tumult at ground level and is out of reach from most predators. He can observe wide vistas below him and watch for prey. Owls also have incredible sense of hearing, pinpointing sounds accurately.  Saturn on this Symbol is bringing a message of waiting, watching and observing - not speaking, not reacting until the time is right.

Keywords: Wisdom and strength. Evening contemplation. Keeping thoughts to oneself. A wise "sage" type of person. Nocturnal vision. Exalted wisdom. "Night owls". Heightened sight and seeing. Being silent and alert for the slightest movement. The ability to see all around. The spirit of birds. Silent flight. Having acute hearing. Lofty ideals.

The Caution: Smug denial of available wisdom. Someone thinking they know it all. Not wanting to join in with others in fun activities. Acting old before their time. Excluding others as being frivolous and unknowing. Waiting for one's prey. Black magic. Being old before one's time. Always being alone. Remote and cut off. Sitting isolated. Saying nothing when one should be saying something. Inability to sleep soundly.

Saturn symbolizes: Authority, rules, discipline and obligation The heavy stuff. What we fear, loss, karma, aging, the establishment, orthodoxy, tradition, status, the concept of time, walls, boundaries, limits, older people, restrictions, patience, conquering difficulties.

Uranus is on Aries 14: A Serpent Coiling Between A Man And A Woman

'A Serpent Coiling Near a Man and a Woman' symbolizes the story of the "temptation" of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. The 'Serpent' offered Adam and Eve the gift of self-knowledge. However, this "knowledge" also revealed to them that they were naked and that this was sinful. The 'Serpent' was said to have brought them both knowledge and guilt. The "snake" can be symbolic of anything that induces fear or negativity into a situation. On the other hand, what the "snake" symbolizes can bring a healing and a profound sense of, or need for, self knowledge. This Symbol can show the celebration of the physical body and the enjoyment of another through all of the senses. The 'Serpent' can also represent a person that comes between a couple, or, someone who is tempting, but perhaps not to be trusted.

Keywords: Enticement. Allurement. Revealing archetypal knowledge that may not be "socially acceptable". Temptations. The Adam and Eve story. Jealousy. Sexual instincts. Life and death issues. Relating based on control. Kundalini energy. Realizing polarity. Individuation. Eating the Apple. The "knowledge of good and evil". Having one's eyes opened. Marking one's territory.

The Caution: Feeling guilty. Being afraid to express one's feelings. Basic instincts and sexual energy. The fear of knowledge, secret or otherwise. Using sexuality as a control device. Disgust or distrust of the body. Sexually transmitted diseases. Hiding nudity or sexuality. Being thrown out of paradise.

Uranus symbolizes: The unexpected, things that are individual or 'different'. Charged, energetic dynamics, electricity, light, lightning bolts, sudden changes, those who live on the fringe of society. Sudden turns and twists of fate. Rebellion, surprises, liberation, freedom.

Neptune is on Pisces 7: Illuminated By A Shaft Of Light, A Large Cross Lies On Rocks Surrounded By Sea And Mist.

This is an image that inspires feelings of chaos and misplaced loyalties. It can feel as though something has been unjustly sacrificed and things have come to nothing. Christ was forsaken on 'A Large Cross'. The 'Cross' can indicate a crucifix and can show the shouldering of trouble and misfortune or faith and hope. The 'Shaft of Light' indicates that spiritual and creative help is at hand.

Keywords: Renewed dedication after loss. Looking for signs of hope and recovery. Coming to terms with loss or failure. Rocks, mist, howling winds on coasts. Crosses of faith. Important and substantial sacrifices. Being devastated by events. Being in the "spotlight" in difficult times. Finding the way through the dark. The need for sacrifice. Alternative religions. Stepping outside religious boundaries.

The Caution: Lost faith. Hopes dashed. Giving up. Being shattered by the constraints of life. Depression. Feeling like one is being sacrificed, sometimes for nothing. Unable to see through the fog. Scorn, persecution and attack because of religious or social reasons. Hopelessness. Things grim, dark and foreboding.

Neptune symbolizes: Mystical, "out there," spirituality and con artists. Dreams, mysteries, mystics and religious issues. Intuition, clairvoyance, seeing into the invisible. Addictive, chaotic, charming, deceptive, illusory, co dependent, sensory awareness.

Pluto is on Capricorn 15: In A Hospital, The Childrens' Ward Is Filled With Toys

'In a Hospital, the Children's Ward is Filled With Toys' brings to mind an image of children in varying states of health. They are in need of care, with doctors and nurses going about their business. There's the need for vigilant duty for the physical and emotional needs of 'The Children'. Some 'Children' will be playing with the 'Toys', whilst others may be sleeping or too ill to respond with much energy or enthusiasm. The whole measles 'scare', which to my mind, is just a beat up if you check the statistics, and immunization and issues to do with health and medicine is very wrapped up with control and money - Pluto's domain.

Keywords: Bringing simple gifts to the sick or disadvantaged. Looking after one's responsibilities. Nurturing people of younger years or those who've had less growth. Workshops held to improve one's health; be it physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. Drugs, crutches, cots, doctors, nurses. Waiting for and needing individual attention. Waiting rooms. Magazines. Toys. Gadgets. Puzzles. Games.

The Caution: Making a large generous show when one doesn't really care. Being dogmatic. Feeling in charge of healing and not listening to what others have to say. Using gadgets instead of simple human caring. Fear of things such as needles, etc. Being greedy and wanting all the toys.

Pluto symbolizes: Unconscious motivation, depth psychology, sex, death and transformation, big business, extortion, control and domination, finding one's inner power, being in control of one's core of being, becoming master of your own 'Underworld'.

Chiron is on Pisces 17: An Easter Promenade

'An Easter Promenade' is seen. A 'Promenade' is defined as a "leisurely walk taken for pleasure, to display one's finery, etc." The 'Easter Promenade' is a celebration of bright clothes, fancy hats, and competitions, with appearances by such things as the easter bunny. This is a tradition born more out of the older celebrations of the spring solstice than the Christian festival of Easter and the crucifixion, but these separate festivals long ago became combined and they now compliment each other. In the northern hemisphere our souls are renewed with the beauty of spring approaching and the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. Feelings of hope and faith are deepened during this very significant event in the Christian calendar. This Symbol is very much about resurrection - time to resurrect some of your hopes, dreams and wishes?

Keywords: Renewed faith in one's life circumstances. Rising up from doubt, fear and loss. Public holidays and their celebrations. Dressing up. Easter bonnets. Easter eggs, chickens and the fertility rites of spring. Rebirth. Forgiveness. Joy. Spiritual unity. Religious holidays. Worship. Renewal. Parades. Transformation.

The Caution: Superficial shows of unity. Craving for attention. Always needing an excuse to get together and unite. Empty displays of faith or joy. Doing things only because everyone else is doing them. Feeling lost, alone and forsaken in the crowd. Guilt trips. Exclusion of other faiths. Religious domination.

Chiron symbolizes: Our wounds - it is known as The Wounded Healer, it also shows The Stories That We Tell Ourselves, it is where we have to focus on healing, it can show things that are out of shape or misplaced or in need of repair.

North Node is on Libra 11: A Professor Peering Over His Glasses At His Students

A 'Professor' is 'Peering Over His Glasses at His Students'. His eyes have been strained over the years from doing close-up work with books and papers and now he needs 'Glasses' for reading and studying. The rational mind requires a different kind of "lens" to that of the emotion or intuition. When the 'Professor' moves his gaze or attention to 'His Students', he needs to use a different focus. He 'Peers Over His Glasses' to look at them and to see them as they truly are. If he observes them through the same intellectual "lenses" he uses for his study, he may neglect to see them as individuals with their own abilities and needs, and their human attributes will get lost in the process. The north node here is showing the need to learn how to truly relate, to get past the labels, the glamour and the gloss of relationships and into what really matters.

Keywords: Lenses of perception. Seeing that others get the message. Intellectual snobbery. Photography. Lenses as shields or barriers between people or things. Observing others. Examining one's self. Understanding where you're looking. Giving advice. Teachers. Professors. The ability to "read others". Motivations or talents of others seen and appreciated.

The Caution: Assuming a superior position. Thinking others have a lesser position or intelligence. Reading endless self-help books and not noticing real life. Bossing others. Not seeing, or caring to notice, one's own faults and limitations. Feeling separate from what's being said or taught. Distortions of perception or observation. Condescending behavior. Seeing people as interruptions.

North Node symbolizes: This is known as quite a 'karmic point' (although all planets and points in a chart can be'karmic'). One's destiny in this life. The things you are meant to integrate, move towards, become. Destined relationships and relationship issues can show up here.

South Node is on Aries 11: The President Of The Republic Or The Ruler Of One's Country

'The President' or the 'Ruler' pictures a person who's in control, has a sense of authority and is called upon to do the right thing for his people, his 'Country' and indeed, his position or office. This 'President' or 'Ruler' has the right, and the duty, to call the shots in their territory or sphere of operation. The south node here appears to be telling us to remember that sense of authority, that self-determination, that calling of the shots that we might have forgotten or given up. Of course, it can also be that we might want a relationship so we can share the joys and the burdens, share our lives and not always do things by ourselves. Both possibilities are possible - even both at once.

Keywords: Developing willpower. Inner power, discipline and integrity. Discipline of thoughts, emotions and actions. Leadership, power and ability along with their responsibilities. Accepting responsibility for one's actions. "Calling the shots". Rulers, presidents, leaders. Taking charge. The need for loyal subjects. Being voted in. The democratic process.

The Caution: Taking control. Lording it over everyone. Being overbearing. Not allowing others to be in charge of their own lives, health or situation. Egotistical and self-centered. Undermining others through a lack of self-awareness or confidence. Being larger than life. Dictators and tyrants. Military Governments.

South Node symbolizes: Past karmic patterns to be overcome, can be habits that are good, but can describe things, relationships, issues that you need to let go of, or, hold you back from manifesting your true destiny. Relationships that feel karmic and difficult, memories from the past.
