The Blessings of True Refuge
In the early hours of this morning (2:14 a.m. GMT) Venus entered Cancer, where she will remain until 27th June. In this sign she reminds us of the beauty of refuge, of having a place in the world where we can feel totally safe, completely loved and fully accepted for what and who we truly are. Having just such a place is a blessing, one that many do not experience. In these coming weeks we have an opportunity not only to seek this out for ourselves, but to also provide it for others.
In her current alliance with Mars, however, Venus reminds us that such a place takes work. It won’t just happen. We must commit to creating an environment in which we can each experience this kind of nurturing acceptance, and we must each focus as much on providing it for others as upon finding it for ourselves. It can be all too easy to blame others for limiting our own self-expression and failing to recognise our true emerging self, without recognising that in doing so we may be doing the exact same thing to them! In the coming weeks Venus asks us to shift from ‘you’ and ‘me’ to ‘us’ and ‘we’. She asks us to recognise and then remember that the more we can create a safe space for others, the safer our environment becomes for ourselves too. It cannot be any other way. What we contribute to the world will return to us. There’s no avoiding it!
But of course there must be balance too, and ultimately we must all decide where we are best supported in our lives and where our environment is too damaging, oppressive or toxic for our own good. Venus desires peace and security, not a miserable existence for the sake of a ‘quiet life’. When we know that our refuge lies elsewhere, in a different kind of life, she supports us to act in order to establish our safe space. And in supporting us, her current alliance with Saturn and Neptune enables us to do so with sensitivity and in a spirit of peace, not in a state of rejection and conflict. Many people at this time are feeling the need to move on in their lives, away from the familiar onto a whole new path which often entails walking away from people and places that have been central to their life up to now. These are massive changes for all concerned and not to be considered lightly. But with Venus now in Cancer, she offers her gentle support to each and every one of us as we create our own refuge and seek our true kith and kin.
At the end of her journey through Cancer, Mercury turns retrograde in the same sign, marking a time of reckoning for relationships and connections which no longer serve the needs of the individuals involved. But in the intervening few weeks we have an opportunity to clarify exactly what constitutes refuge for us and those around us, and to consider how we can both provide it for others and create it for ourselves.
Wishing you a blessed week.Sarah Varcas
